The Ballard High School Drama Department has plenty to be proud of, after its production of Urinetown: The Musical was nominated for four awards, and took home the top prize for Outstanding Costume Design at the 5th Avenue High School Musical Theatre Awards on June 9.

The show was one of eight musicals out of over 120 performed in Washington state during the 2013-14 school year to be nominated for Outstanding Overall Musical, Outstanding Choreography, and Outstanding Ensemble (the Rebels). The “Urine Jail Combo” also received Honorable Mention for Outstanding Orchestra.

The production wass directed by Shawn M. Riley, with vocal direction by Courtney Rowley Pelavin, instrumental direction by Michael James, and choreography by Eia Waltzer.

The cast closed out the award show at Benaroya Hall with a performance of their energetic number, “Run, Freedom, Run,” for the audience of 2,500 musical theatre students, parents, teachers, and local celebrities.

Congratulations to the talented students from BHS that helped make the production possible!
