Seattle Audubon Society is currently looking for volunteers for their Finding Urban Nature (FUN) program. The program introduces 3rd and 4th graders to the interconnections between producers, consumers, and decomposers in the schoolyard habitat.

Volunteers lead small groups of students through hands-on outdoor lessons. The four lessons in the fall and four more in the spring give students a chance to fully explore the schoolyard habitat, proving that nature is around us no matter where we live, work, and play. The program serves elementary schools all over Seattle.

FUN relies on 120 volunteers to assist in delivering the program each year and organizers are seeking nearly 50 more volunteers to meet their needs for fall classes.

Volunteers devote about two hours a week for four weeks in the spring and/or fall and lead a group of four to six students through each lesson with the support of the school’s FUN Team Leader and classroom teachers. No previous teaching or science background is required and volunteers often report that they have as much fun and learn just as much as the students do!

Applicants need to apply before October 2 to volunteer for the Fall program. Seattle Audubon provides all training, supplies, and support necessary to make volunteers successful leaders.

If you are interested in learning how you can get involved call or e-mail Christine Scheele, Education Manager, (206) 523-8243 ext. 19 or David Garcia, Education Program Assistant, (206) 523-8243 ext.11.
