Throwback Thursday: The Market Street of yesteryear

Market Street is, and always has been, the bustling center of our neighborhood. We thought it was time this week to take a look at Market St in all its glory back in the day.

The black and white photo below, taken in 1939, features a busy Market Street. Stores and restaurants that can be seen in the photo include Safeway, Fuller Paints, Eichers Bagdad Market, Manning Coffee Stores and Guy  Drugs.

The black and white photo below, taken in 1925, shows another angle of Market St at the corner of 22nd Ave NW (the location of the current Ballard Coffee Works). The Majestic Theatre (currently the cinema) and the old Ballard Library (currently the Kangaroo and Kiwi Pub) buildings can be seen in the background.

The building was home to the Bagdad Theatre and stores that included Horluck’s Danish Ice Cream, the Bagdad Dress Shop and Mickey’s Fountain Lunch. The building is currently home to Starbucks and a variety of homewares and clothing stores including Trove and Romanza.
