North Beach Forest Steward Luke McGuff emailed in to let us know that at least 43 full paint cans were illegally dumped in North Beach Park over the weekend.
McGuff confirms that the incident occurred sometime between 3:15 p.m. on Sunday afternoon and 9:40 a.m. on Monday morning. According to McGuff, the cans (some pictured below) were discovered unopened and placed in a location that took a fair amount of effort to reach.
Forest Stewards preparing for a planting work party discovered the dumped paint cans on Monday morning. “This will cost the city hundreds of dollars to clean up,” says McGuff. “There was no spillage at the time the dumping was found, but even so it will require extra time for already strapped crews to remove,” he continues.
In terms of paint disposal options locals have many. Latex paint can be disposed of by allowing to air dry and then placing in regular garbage. Kitty litter can also be stirred into the paint to speed the drying process. Alkyd and oil based paints and varnishes can be taken to the North Seattle Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility (12550 Stone Ave N) for no fee.
“It would have taken less effort to dispose of properly than to dump in the park,” says McGuff.
