Honey bee swarm season starts in Ballard

My Ballard reader Betsy emailed in to let us know that honey bees have started to swarm in the neighborhood in search of their new digs for the season.

“One such colony found temporary quarters near the corner of 28th and 73rd in Ballard today,” writes Betsy.

A volunteer member of the Puget Sound Bee Keepers came to collect the bees and gave them a home in her hives. The below video shows her lightly sweeping the bees down into a collection hive box with a feather.

As of 5 p.m. last night Betsy reports that all of the bees had not fully moved into the box for relocation.

According to the Puget Sound Bee Keepers, honey bee swarms are not dangerous and the bees are simply in a process of finding a new home.

“The swarm is not dangerous, however, unless you are an experienced beekeeper, please do not attempt to disturb/displace the swarm,” writes PSBK on their website.

If you notice a swarm near your home click here to contact the Puget Sound Bee Keepers who will safely relocate the bees.
