Update on Carkeek Park poisoned meat scare

On Thursday, we posted a tip we received about a dog that was put down after coming into contact with poisoned meat. After speaking with Seattle Police, the information was refuted; no dogs have been put down for a number of years at Carkeek for this reason. However, because the story popped up again on social media, we thought it best to follow up and understand why it resurfaced as a recent story.

The story originated from a post yesterday morning in a public Facebook group called Parents in Magnolia, Ballard and Queen Anne. In the post, a woman wrote that her father, an SPD officer, had heard that a friend had “just” put their dog down after it had been poisoned and therefore wanted to spread the word. However, after we posted the story, she followed up with her father: as it turns out, the friend’s version of “just” was 18 months ago, meaning there is absolutely no imminent danger for dogs at Carkeek.
