Local concierge service launches to connect non-smart phone users to Uber and Lyft

A new members-only concierge service has launched that connects non-smart phone users with the app-based services of Lyft and Uber.

The new service, called Arrive, allows members to book rides with Lyft and Uber over the phone with a representative as opposed to needing a smart phone to utilize the app.

According to co-founders Elizabeth Legg and Amy Stice, Arrive seeks to connect these users to safe, reliable transportation by serving as an intermediary between the rider and established ride services.

Legg and Stice had the idea for the company when looking for transportation solutions for Stice’s 92-year-old grandmother.

“I was looking for a way for my grandmother to get around that felt as easy as going out into her driveway and getting into her Camry,” says Stice. “Arrive was created to be that. My grandmother talks to a friendly person on the phone and a ride can pick her up from home in under ten minutes. Like a lot of her friends, she carries a flip-phone, so it’s simple for her to call us again to get picked up from her destination.”

To use the service, Arrive members pay a one-time sign-up fee of $30, and a $5 monthly membership fee. Each ride costs $3 over the cost billed by the ride service.

Arrive also maintains detailed records on each member, including their favorite destinations, so ordering a ride will always be easy and members never need to worry about looking up addresses in advance of requesting a trip.

The Arrive concierge line (866-ARRIVE-8) is now open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Pacific time, seven days a week, and is currently staffed by Arrive’s co-founders.

Arrive is able to dispatch rides in any market served by Uber or Lyft, and to schedule rides in advance. Every dispatched ride is monitored by an Arrive concierge.

Development Update January 5: A subdivision and Salmon Bay maintenance

Two decisions make up today’s update from the City of Seattle’s Department of Construction and Inspections as posted in the Land Use Information Bulletin.

Decisions:

2425 NW 54th St

A Land Use Application has been approved to allow 2,000 cu. yds. of maintenance dredging within the Salmon Bay waterway.

1546 NW 62nd St

A Land Use Application has been approved to subdivide one development site into two unit lots. The construction of residential units is under Project #6483373. This subdivision of property is only for the purpose of allowing sale or lease of the unit lots. Development standards will be applied to the original parcel and not to each of the new unit lots.

Appeals of the above decision must be received by the Hearing Examiner no later than 1/19/2016.

Panda the dog is lost in Ballard

Panda the dog is lost in Ballard and was last seen this morning (Wednesday, January 4).

She was last seen wearing a red collar (with a Rainier Vet Tag and Panda Lee tag with phone numbers attached) and a black harness going across 15th in Ballard towards Fred Meyer.

“Please share and keep an eye out in the Ballard/Fremont area for her as we hope to get our dog back,” writes Panda’s owner Ian.

Seattle Parks and Recreation on the lookout for volunteers

The team at Seattle Parks and Recreation is on the lookout for volunteers for 2017. They are hosting a Volunteer Information Fair to learn about our volunteer opportunities on February 2 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Northgate Community Center (10510 5th Ave NE).

Seattle Parks and Recreation volunteers coach youth sports, help plant native trees in our parks, serve on various advisory councils and boards, and provide countless other services that allow us to have the first-rate park and recreation system that Seattle loves and depends on.

At the Volunteer Information Fair locals can find out what opportunities are available, learn more about the jobs that volunteers do, ask questions and get registered as a volunteer on site. Plus, a free lunch will be served!

Representatives from several of our units will also be on hand to describe their volunteer needs, including the Green Seattle Partnership, our Environmental Learning Centers, Community Advisory Councils, Adopt a Park and more.

Ballard Library to host preview of La Traviata

Ballard Library is hosting a preview concert of Seattle Opera’s upcoming production of Giuseppe Verdi’s “La Traviata” from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. today (Wednesday, January 4).

“La Traviata” is a passionate portrait of a worldly courtesan forced by bourgeois society to give up the man of her dreams. The opera enthralls with a wide range of moods packed into a tautly-constructed story, with a musical score that elevates a timeless tale of moral hypocrisy and selfless sacrifice.

Featuring professional singers and an accompanist, this hour-long presentation will take you on a journey through the story and music of the opera.

The event is free and registration is not required.

Ballard Natural Drainage Project reaches completion

The Ballard Natural Drainage System project is complete. Thank you for your patience and participation throughout the construction phase. Your engagement helped us shape the design and navigate construction concerns. We really appreciate it.

Now that construction is finished, we want to let you know how the new infrastructure will be maintained and how you can help. SPU is responsible for maintaining the roadside rain gardens. This includes the thin grass strips in-between the cells and walkways/sidewalks.

It can take from one to three years for the plants to fully establish, so please be patient while they’re small and growing. During the early plant establishment phase, you can expect to see crews on site about once per month to maintain the plants, water, mulch, weed and mitigate sediment build up. After the establishment phase, SPU crews will be on site approximately quarterly to maintain the cells and ensure they are functioning properly.

The inlets to the cells will remain temporarily plugged with asphalt to allow the newly laid compost to settle with rain water and the plants to take root before they are immersed in stormwater. If we allow large streams of stormwater into the cell too early, it can remove or erode the compost and plants and create other maintenance issues. The plugs will be removed by our contractor this spring.

SPU crews will:

  • Check for proper function
  • Remove sediment
  • Clear curb openings
  • Remove trash and debris
  • Remove weeds
  • Water plants
  • Prune, replace or remove trees if necessary
  • Adjust soil grades as necessary

You can help by:

  • Clearing curb openings

Please do not:

  • Prune or trim vegetation
  • Add or replace plants
  • Use chemicals, herbicides, fertilizers or insecticides
  • Add or remove soil, compost, sediment or fill
  • Store items in the rain garden
  • Remove dead or dying plants
  • Plant edibles in the rain garden
  • Play or work in the roadside rain gardens

After a heavy rain or storm, it is not uncommon to see standing water in the roadside rain gardens. The cells will typically drain within 24 hours after the rain stops falling. However, if you notice a system is not draining after 72 hours, or if it has been damaged in any way, please call SPU’s 24/7 hotline to report it at 206-386-1800. SPU will check the system to see if it needs any maintenance adjustments.

If you don’t have a roadside rain garden in front of your property, you may have an improved planting strip.

  • New grass will be maintained by SPU for one year
  • New groundcover and trees will be maintained by SPU for three years

Maintenance of the planting strips is the responsibility of the adjacent property owner after these allotted time periods. Street trees within the landscape strips are the property of Seattle Department of Transportation’s Urban Forestry program. Please be careful not to damage the trees when mowing or maintaining the planting strip.

A Land Use Application has been approved to subdivide one development site into three unit lots. The construction of residential units is under Project #6552475. This subdivision of property is only for the purpose of allowing sale or lease of the unit lots. Development standards will be applied to the original parcel and not to each of the new unit lots.

Appeals of the above decision must be received by the Hearing Examiner no later than 1/17/2016.

Ballard Post Office drive up box temporarily removed for maintenance

The team at My Ballard has received a number of emails about the drive up mailbox removal at Ballard Post Office.

We visited the Post Office and found a sign on the door indicating that the mailbox has been removed for maintenance purposes and that, in the interim period, customers are asked to mail their items inside.

The My Ballard team will update readers when the mailbox is reinstalled after maintenance is complete.
