Doh! I wish I would have read this about 10 mins ago. I often wonder about that place and didn't know they deliver. We've been having delivery from Chillies Paste in Fremont. I really like them as well - (and I JUST ordered from them...) Will def try Wild Orchid next!

I'm vegetarian, too, but my mom was always really good about making separate stuffing for me & veggie dishes that were really vegetarian (no animal parts like marshmallows on the sweet potatoes or lard in the pie crust... some non-vegetarians who have tried to cook for me before didn't know what they were doing). I usually brought my own Quorn "turkey" roast and said I'd be fine with that plus the regular veggie items she already planned on serving... but she insisted (thank goodness). However, I stopped going for a few years because it became more about whatever sports game was on TV than a family getting together for a holiday dinner. Now that I've moved 1200 miles away I finally have a really good excuse for not going... but I will miss my mom's cooking. So... I'll just be relaxing here in my new home this year without the guilt trip I sometimes got for not participating :)

I agree with Boardbrown - actually...I delivered both children at Ballard. With my first - he ended up having to go to the NICU, which Ballard does not have. He was transferred to First Hill, and I was transferred later in the day. I had a c-section, so I was hospitalized 3 days. I was SO upset that I had to leave Ballard. At First Hill they shoved me into a room that was the size of a closet and the nurses NEVER came around. On a side note as well....I had one nurse at First Hill that claimed to give me my pain meds twice - but she DID NOT...and I was in excruciating pain.

I had my daughter, also a c-section at Ballard last year and it was a COMPLETELY different experience. Because it's so small and intimate, we had TONS of attention from the doctors and nurses. And instead of pushing me out the door like they did at Swedish First Hill...they were actually trying to get me to say 4 days instead of the standard 3 after a c-section.

And the room service can't be beat as far as hospital food goes!

It was a lovely experience. You will be treated like a Queen. Congrats!

I agree that Rachel Torrez and her staff are great! She's very good at explaining what's going on and even drew me a diagram to explain my back problems. Doctors I have had in the past (not in Ballard) have been condescending and made me scared to ask questions or bring up concerns. I feel completely comfortable with her.

Sure! Sorry I missed this until now everyone - didn't mean to drop out! You can email me at ferviddesign AT yahoo DOT com

There are a couple of choices - Aster coffeehouse and Miro Tea both have histories of being very hospitable to knitting groups. I'm happy to meet with a small group for lessons or just set up time with folks as it suits them.

If you don't have yarn and needles we may want to go by Full Circle to pick some up. I'll bring some for folks to try anyway -- certain yarns and needle sizes are easier to learn with than others.

Hi Willow,
I delivered at Swedish Ballard and it was the absolute BEST experience possible. The nurses were incredible and I was very well cared for. The intimacy of the birth floor was so nice to have - I really felt like they did everything for me. I cannot recommend it enough.

Rachel Torrez is terrific. I've been seeing her for years. Her nursing staff is great too. My husband prefers to see a fellow man. He likes G. Scott Stevens at the Polyclinic Family Medicine Northwest. We have had bad experiences with Gary Rosen at Ballard Family Medicine.

We are celebrating on Friday, due to the parenting schedule. I'm cooking, I cook every year. We don't invite family, other than my SO's dad and maybe a family friend. We hate big family get togethers so we just have our own small family thing. Every year I cook a very big turkey, green bean casserole, yams with a brown sugar syrup on the side, and the kids favorite, garlic mashed potatoes. We usually buy a pumpkin pie but I have been known to make one once in a while. This year instead of missing out on dessert I'm going to make myself a gluten free pecan pie. And it will be ALL MINE! We haven't figured out what to do on Thanksgiving. It's just the two of us and we don't have a lot of money. Maybe I'll just cook us a simple dinner.

Blacksheep-if you are going to not grow a spine (or a pair) before the holiday, then here is a con. Send a list of options for your host to prepare for you. They may choose from your approved items depending on the logistics of their cooking and possible preferences of other guests. To make their participation mandatory rather than an option, choose one of these reasons. Food allergy recently developed-due to medication, changes in hormones, eating too much or many of said item (my experience). Or the religious restrictions on diet. If they won't cook something suitable for you given allergies or religion, they are selfish boorish people that deserve each other but not you. So then you at least have fun with it which is why I prefer people use the allergy con. Make sure you mention your new allergies often. During dinner prep and ESPECIALLY at the serving line or table. Let the drama flow while clutching your throat and chest in a respiratory fit. When I eat apples my throat closes up and is the same as a bee sting allergy. Fake those symptoms, signal to someone to get a anti-histimine out of your purse. Do this while the host has just sat down to eat. Then after their food is cold your symptoms get better. Drama and hysterics are a staple at my family holidays and are what really MAKE a holiday get together. Next year you may find food options being served that suit you.

Oh no you di'nt!!!!
DO NOT disparage the green bean casserole if you are talking about the Minnesota-wisconsin staple. Fresh beans ruin the texture dumbass. Oh yeah lets use fresh beans and make a nice sauteed mushroom reduced sauce thing to mix in. NOT! You would probably serve it with something other than the dried onion things sprinkled on top. Something Fancy Schmancy would be better for your pretentious taste buds! That casserole recipe was refined by our scandihoovian midwest ancestors over decades. Good Day chef fancy pants. I SAID GOOD DAY!

Now, back to the issue at hand - cats.
I mean no harm to cat lovers out there. It is just that dogs are better.
Could someone with a cat give the The Clash thing a try and play the last track on Sandinista and see what happens? I'm just curious.
:)

rory- You should have started a NEW thread for this comment! Do you not know how the interwebs forums work? You are probably not from here and an outlander. I would bet you haven't been on a bus EVER. Now stay on TOPIC!

Briar Rose, not everywhere is it entertainment. Or maybe the posts elsewhere are somebody's idea of entertainment, just not mine.

Or, Blacksheep, specify that if you're going to go (and if there is no option not to go) then they need to come up with food to feed you with. That's only right if they are hosting YOU, considering they aren't allowing you to host them. By bringing your own dinner, they're just forgetting about you in the whole equation. If that's agreed upon, that's fine but it's obvious that you don't particularly like it. I'd talk to your family about it if you haven't already.
