If you don't have a dog, it's still tons of fun and it's even better if you can borrow a dog :) I know this came up last year too and there are a LOT of walkers, it's a great walking course too.

Thanks Gracie. I am actually posting for my friend whose cat it is. They have been checking the shelter regularly and so far don't have any news. The "bright side" is that this cat lived outside for 12 years before they got it, so he is pretty street savvy. I'll let you know if they hear anything.

I didn't get that close of a look as I was driving by. It was obviously dead. I was hoping instead of cat it was some other creature. It was in middle of 32nd for two days when I called it in. If it's your gray cat missing, I hope this wasn't the one. But to set your mind at ease, Animal Control does maintain a list of dead animals they pick up.

Here's a useful article on GFCIs: http://home.howstuffworks.com/question117.htm
If your disposal has an internal problem that's leaking some current, likely to the drain pipe, the GFCI will see less current coming back through it than it saw heading out to the disposal. Even a small disparity is enough to cause it to shut down.

Sounds like a new disposer is in your future. Tip from my past: don't forget to attach the dishwasher drain hose to the disposer before running the dishwasher!

Since I originally posted, I tried running an extension cord to a non-GFCI outlet, and the result was an occasional high pitched squeaking sound that accompanied the normal spinning sound. It was harsh enough to want to turn off right away. I also unhooked the unit from the plumbing to inspect under better light, and still didn't see anything suspicious.

Corvus, to answer your question, I used a hex wrench to spin it and it spun very easily. I've had to use this trick over the years to clear out a clog every now and then. This was definitely not that.

I'm leaning toward just getting a new one rather than having an electrician or plumber come out just to tell me this one is busted.

I would try to replace the GFIC outlet if you are able to do that.
they do go bad every once and awhile in my experience.

I have also found that garbage disposals don't seem to last that long (5-10 years) so perhaps there is some electrical malfunction in the unit itself. they are less than a 100 bucks I think and fairly easy to replace.

good luck!

My garbage disposal is tripping my GFCI anytime I turn it on. I don't know if I have a bad disposal (it's been working fine for 6 years) or somehow the wiring suddenly decided to go bad. I'd rather not call an electrician out here and pay their expensive minimums just to look at what is probably a 15 minute job. I've confirmed that it's not jammed and the unit hasn't doesn't require a reset.

If you've got a basic understanding of electrical/GFCI circuits and want to give it a shot, let me know what you'd charge. My schedule is very flexible.

Thanks.

I think they maintain a dead animal list for one to check. I'm hoping this isn't their cat.

Yay! Just heard from the owner that her doggies were just found, so I edited this posting and removed the craigslist info.

**************

"A gentleman found them wandering in 67th and 24th (they stuck together). He posted their pic and an ad on Craigslist and we were reunited!"

"It is so awesome to know that we have great people/neighbors...to help us out in these situations. Thank you so very much!"

Hope your beautiful cat has come home. If not, with this nicer weather cats go into open basements, houses, sheds and garages. If you have any of these, check. Also ask your neighbors. Happens all the time. Had a cat that was missing 9 days & found in basement - scared and hungry but ok, people just bought house, had door opened &ckosed nevercknowing TC was in there. I put posters up all around. Might do that too. Best of luck.

I have great neighbors.

PG - I didn't see the 150 until you mentioned it. I don't know why it's so high but I do believe in charging 50 dollars or so. This link explains it better than I can.

http://www.pet-abuse.com/pages/animal_adoption/free_pets.php

You need to make the fee larger than what people can get from a lab or a dog fighting ring buying bait. I know people think they can spot one of these people but they can be very good- bringing their kids to look legit etc.
I heard a guy brag about talking a kid into giving him his guinea pig saying it was going to a good home but instead this guy had a snake.

As far as knowing one when you see one, I almost married a sociopath. I'm a pretty smart cookie and I was completely blindsided when, quite by accident, I found out. I figure that if I can spend that much time with someone and not know, a short interview doesn't make me feel real confident. The rehoming fee takes care of any doubt. These horrible people are not going to buy an animal for more than they can sell it for. Problem solved.
