Was it a Hobbit sized single female? That would have been me. I just sat at the bar when I didn't see Gilman Girl or Reba, tossed back a kolsch and did some texting.
Yeah, it'll work sometime. No worries. :-)

Did you sit at the bar? I did see a single female come in, but I was just getting my bill by then and I hate to make a nuisance of myself by pestering every single female that comes in. Also, she didn't seem to look like she was waiting for someone. It'll work sometime, I promise. :)

Ack! Timing! I couldn't get there until about 5:30, didn't see anyone who looked like Reba or Gilman Girl (don't know what Phoo looks like) so I had a beer and left.

phoo, I think if you go the Trek route then you've got to go old school trek--meaning, nerf food cubes. *That* I bet you could make. Just use the same substance of which Twinkies are made. Heck, just take a twinkie and a child's playdoh-form, and compress the entire thing into a cube. Delicious!

Alrighty, people's tomorrow it is. Does anyone want to go to the thrift store with me first?

BallardENTP, have you considered cuisine much at Flynn's? I always thought it would be fun to have a genuine Star Trek bar. No, not beer coloured blue and sold as Romulan Ale, but original dishes that fit the vague specs given in various series'. Something spicy and vegetarian for Vulcan, spicy/bitterish hasparat, even (mostly as a joke) Gachk(sp). You can buy medical grade meal worms (which is what it's made of), though I couldn't speak to cost. Spring Wine, Tranja, etc, etc. I suppose that's definitely mixing sci fi genres, but man it would be fun to sit down and order some rachdageno(sp) or blood wine (not sure how to pull that one off yet). Even more fun to make it up!

Reba, running is geeky? Next you'll tell me that purposefully consorting with the Day Star is geeky!

Phoo - They are planning to put the Star Trek Experience in downtown Vegas somewhere. I don't know yet if Quarks will be brought back to life. I keep trying to re-create the Bolian Sunset at home.
Yeah, I think I can geek out with a People's happy hour tomorrow. It is one of the best happy hours, food-wise.
Don't worry, SunriseSunset, I'm a low tech '80's geek and only understand half of this thread myself. I'm very fluent in pinball and Dr. Who, though. :-)

Reba, you rock. Peoples pub was da shit.

Nora, I might be down for tomorrow too. And hellya I remember Quark's. I was there for a computer convention once and we all went on the star trek ride which bluescreened and the poor poor workers had to put up with us for a full 30 minutes waiting in a little room. We gave those guys so much crap and they never broke character. Respect.

Sunrise, no worries. If you're remotely willing to learn, we're willing to entertain! I'll admit there was some geeking out, but entertaining stories are all equal.

BallardENTP, thanks so much for the great company. Transcribing my speech was 1,000 times more fun thanks to you and Reba. Long live German food and Jumpman. Also, props to you for running things so well. I was surprised when I found out attendance numbers, since it runs as well as Defcon.

Again Reba. Peoples Pub now has my undying and drunken gratitude.

Well I have to admit, despite being at pax (and being worthy enough to get the paxpox), I am not a gamer. I am more of a HW geek. I did get to see the surface and action and got a few pics. It was all just demo stuff... no really useful apps yet, though it had some very serious potential. But which bar do YOU know that can shell out to have a Surface for every table?

Oh for a "movie soundtrack" try Fantomas (the band). Would definitely be an eerie thing to play in the background at a bar.

Did you see the crazy expensive pool table that had some of the effects you were talking about? It wasn't a Surface, it did it with a video projector and camera tracking. On the web, not pax.

Anybody for People's Pub tonight during happy hour? A shame I missed bourbon night.

Yeah, we had Surface at PAX. I didn't get to see it myself, but I heard they built a custom app for sorting through the archives. Which sounds like a worthy goal. But I'm with you: they need better apps. Like an interactive D&D battlemat with dynamic environmental and spell effects, a combat auto-calculator, and that senses figure location (and creates ripples where the dice hit the table).

That'd be rad.

And don't worry about too-loud music in the nerd cantina (hereafter named "Flynn's"). The mp3 player will be stocked purely with soundtracks, and decibels will always be at the "background-music-while-gaming" level.

Thanks Reba, I somehow remembered that Old P did have wifi, though I didn't know how my brain came to think that. It must've created a mental tag everytime I walked by it and it beckoned "wifi" at me. :) Think I'll look up people's pub too. Now the challenge is whether I'm gonna get off my butt and walk down there. No car today.

ETA: Oh man a german place! After my heart, reba! Now those are some happy hour specials that won't keep on giving the gluten gift long after I've eaten! Mmmmmm.

BTW, I know there are some hacker spaces about and there's Shorty's. Shorty's has nothing to eat but overpriced hotdogs, but has a mad amount of pinball machines. I know there are several hackerspaces in the area, but short of the black lodge (which isn't public), I haven't been. I'm not all that geeky anymore, except maybe when you get me amongst normals.

Oh baby, I got to see the microsoft surface and it was pretty sexy. Too bad they'll have it doing something boring and underpowered. None of the cool people can afford one (well, *maybe* Jeff Moss, but who knows how MS would feel about that and I'd still never see it).

Wow, with that and everything else I'm definitely hanging out at your bar. But don't forget, one should be able to TALK at the bar and not scream over the music. I keep trying to like Tin hat, being drawn in by the pinball machines but being driven out by the loud music.

Don't forget Colossus and Sneakers in your nerd movies. :)

What if I took the wifi out as a qualifier? Really, it's a speech I need to work on, so I don't really *need* wifi, I just like having IRC as often as possible. :) I can always run it off my phone.

Old P is worth a shot, though I don't know if they have wifi. Honestly I don't know if such a place exists, phoo, but it sounds dreamy. Sigh. One day I'll get together with like-minded partners and create a nerd bar. I mean, nerd tavern. I mean, nerd cantina.

Gourmet tots, pizza, and even a few actual tasty + healthy options. Amazing beers (including Smithwyck's and Spaten Optimator) and spirits (including Oban scotch and Absinthe). Wifi. MS Surface. Power outlets in every booth. Monday Night Magic sealed-deck tournaments. Tuesday trivia night. Wednesday DS night. Pinball. Retro coinop pac-man, dig-dug, and galaga tables. Big screens showing nerd movies (Star Wars, Indiana Jones) and shows (Firefly, BSG, Dr. Who); MST3k commentary allowed and encouraged. A library of classic board games. Happy Hour specials that include not only food and drink, but 1/2 price dice and booster packs--but only if you beat the bartender on a d20 roll.

What if we do the thrift store tomorrow and the booze tonight? What's a good place that is cheapish, has good grub, good spirits AND wifi and doesn't mind me hanging out with laptop? Yeah, I don't ask for much. :D

Likewise. Which is really sad because I love thrift stores and booze.

Per my usual MO, I am posting last minute (thrift store closes at 4:30 and I'm probably walking from 65th) to see if anyone would like to join me on a thrift store quest. Afterwards I was thinking of trying out old peculiar or a place that can feed strange diet me. Anyone up for it? Tomorrow is possible, but i won't have evening time so much then to go out after.

BTW, do they have wifi and spirits? cause maybe I'll just hang out there and work on my laptop and have folks show up or not. Is there a better wifi and spirits place with an awesome happy hour?
