Oh, sorry - I did take it that you were perhaps bored with the topic. I'm anxiously awaiting the 56 UP as well! Wildly interesting!

PennyGirl,

I'm sure the Up Series is OLD news for you - that series was probably a block buster in its hey day all over the United Kingdom. Over the years, as a city slicker here in the states, I have found the the Up Series fascinating! I was introduced to the first film about 10 years ago and I was immediately hooked. The lives of the participants, and country in which they live, is so different from the norm in my world. I guess I like to watch...

I've seen all the Ups and think it's a fantastic series. It's also been very sad in parts. One person died (I won't say who, in case you haven't seen that far) and even though I sort of expected it, it really affected me deeply. Is there going to be a "56 Up"? I think I remember reading somewhere that Apted said he wasn't doing any more of them.

Up is fantastic! I really enjoyed most of the films. Quite an ambitious project. I just watched No Impact Man and was so annoyed by the main guy. It was in fact, frustrating to watch.

Another documentary I really enjoyed is The War Room, which chronicled Carville and Stephanopolis spin-doctoring the first Clinton presidential campaign. They were masterful at dealing with Bubba's womanizing issues. Also there's the subplot of Carville and Matalin's courtship while they are working on opposing presidential campaigns.

Scared Straight reminds me of when my father took my eight year old brother and seven year old me and had us locked in the Lake Forest Park city jail for a half a day. Donj't know if it made us go straight but it scared the bejeeus out of us. I hope jails aren't used like that anymore.

Tonight I watched "Scared Straight" - bunch of individual vandals, drug runners, and out and out thiefs are sentenced to a day at Rahway State Prison and they get Scared Straight. Its good because you get to see them as high school thugs being talked to and sometimes screamed at by killers, rapers, grand larconists trying to warn them to straighten up or they will land in prison. Then they are interviewed again 20 years later. Love that. Like Before and After. Also really good flick.

The Up Series is a series of documentary films that have followed the lives of fourteen British children since 1964, when they were seven years old. The children were selected to represent the range of socio-economic backgrounds in Britain at that time, with the explicit assumption that each child's social class predetermines their future. Every seven years, the director, Michael Apted, films new material from as many of the fourteen as he can get to participate. Filming for the next installment in the series, 56 Up, is expected in late 2011 or early 2012.

Think original episode is called SevenUp! So darn good So every 7 years the film maker revisits those people...since 1964. In '64 they were pretty young so the newest one due out next year or 2012 they will all be in their mid 50s. It is a really amazing documentary. Watch the first one and you will be hooked.
