What's everyone doing for Thanksgiving? My birthday is that day so I'm beginning the morning with a good work out at the gym then to my daughter's for pumpkin pancakes. After that we will take the dog on a nice long walk, come back and work a puzzle while cooking stuffed acorn squash, brussel sprouts, stuffing and maybe a tasty birthday cakey. Spending the eve of Thanksgiving trying out the new veggie restaurant on Cap Hill called Plum.

Once when I was 9 and my birthday fell on Thanksgiving that year my mother took me aside and said, "Now,plese don't tell anyone it is your birthday because we don't want to spoil the real meaning of thd day...thanks mom...

I'm taking the whole week off to celebrate my SIXTY-SECOND year...how is that possible I still feel and sometimes act 18. Life's a mystery.

I have heard of Shoofly Pie Co. in West Seattle, but eh...I missed their deadline of today to place orders and am desiring a place much closer. Thanks for any relevant feedback.

Wild Orchid = Best Ballard Thai food!

After reading the Gabriel's Fire post, it got me thinking. I still don't see The Wild Orchid in the Restaurants section. It's right behind Larsen's Bakery on 80th and 24th.

Hands down the best Thai I have had in Ballard... or Seattle for that matter. Exceptional spicy food! Ever had a 4-5 star thai plate that was bland and mild? Not here, full flavored and can be very spicy (if so desired). I have yet to find a plate that I wouldn't recommend, I am at the point now where I just ask the nice woman working what she would recommend.

If you like thai food or want to try excellent thai food, check em out. I can't recommend them enough. Oh, the best part: they deliver!

PS: if you like it really spicy, order it "Thai style spice."

J.K. - would you consider teaching a beginning knitting group?

Hi J.K.,

I saw your post in an older forum thread about knitting. I tried to learn when I was in grade school and it was a horribly frustrating experience (got so stressed out and tightened up that the metal needles would squeak!). Any chance you would consider teaching a beginner knitting class? I may find others who want to learn or re-learn, and there may be some MyBallard folks interested, too. I was thinking of taking a class at Bad Woman Yarn in Wallingford, but I'd much prefer to just walk to somewhere in Ballard (maybe the library or...?).

Thanks,

I realize this has been discussed before, but it is difficult to dig up old threads.

I am looking for a breakfast spot where one can have a quiet conversation that is less likely to be overheard by other patrons. The food has to be good or at least decent and must be within walking distance of the Sunday market. I realize this is a tall order, but I seem to be good at those. Open to making compromises if I need to. If there's going to be a long line on Sunday please let me know (yeah, yeah, I know, they probably all do).

heck, it can be a lunch spot too, long as they have more than sandwiches (burp) or gluten free options.

Thanks in advance. :)

Become a Cat Foster Parent - Sat. Nov. 21, 1 pm

Seattle Animal Shelter's Foster Cat Program is always looking for new foster homes for the many orphaned cats at the shelter, and is currently in great need of more foster parents. SAS is offering an extra foster parent training this Saturday (11/21) at 1:00pm in hopes of gaining some new folks who can help right away! The training will be approx 1 1/2 hours and at the end a new FP could take a foster cat home.

More details on the Cat Foster Program can be found here http://www.seattle.gov/animalshelter/foster.htm. You don't need to be a SAS Volunteer to be a Cat Foster Parent, you just have to attend our training - so if your friend, neighbor, aunt, cousin, co-worker - you get the picture - might be ready to open their home, spare bathroom, spare bedroom up to a kitty cat in need this weekend....please pass this on! SAS especially needs fosters for ISO cats - these cats are recovering from URI (colds) and need a warm place to stay with plenty of TLC. Fostering is a very rewarding way to volunteer and save a life!

Please RSVP by Friday to sasfostercats@gmail.com if you can make it! SAS will email you the application/agreement that would need to be turned in at the training session.

I just received a probable diagnosis of hypothyroidism for my sweet Archie kitty (he's still at the vets to complete testing). Has anyone out there had experience with the treatment for this? The daily meds sound dreadful and the one-time radiation treatment costs over $1k. I found a natural remedy called Resthyro that sounds promising.

I know there have been many posts regarding recommendations for local veterinarians, but I'd like to ask for recommendations for a vet who specializes/works with cats. My wonderful vet retired last year and I'd really like to find a great and caring vet here in Ballard. I took the sweet kitty I adopted last spring from PAWS--after she barfed up tape worms (totally and completely disgusting!!)--to a vet here in Ballard, and he was unfortunately not a bit gentle or seemingly interested in cats. My other cat is way overdue for an exam and I'd really appreciate any recommendations for a local veterinarian who loves cats. Any recommendations???

rant of the week: replying without reading

::disclaimer:: This rant is not directed at anyone on this forum and is intended purely for entertainment purposes.

The other day I posted on a mailing list about a meeting that I organized and also added a second meeting happening beforehand. At the end of the mail I posted the website, addy, and phone number for the pub it is happening at. Shortly after sending I got a private reply from someone who said he noticed the pub info in my signature line and am I the owner, cause he'd like some info. I politely replied back that the info was for the pub I had announced the meeting to be held at.

However.

WHAT. THE. F! Clearly he had not read the email and *replied* regarding an email that he hadn't even read. I understand skimming emails you aren't interested in, but I heartily believe you should carefully read anything you reply to. Frequently I read something 2-3+ times while replying. This is not in fact the first trouble I've had with folks on this list not "getting" what I wrote, but it is the most blatant case of not reading.

I mentioned this incident to a friend (also on the list) and asked for an honest opinion over whether I communicated that poorly. Was it something I am doing that I can change? He said that no, people just don't read and that he's had chronic issues with his boss starting an email thread, then chastising him for overusing email to communicate. He's had a number of incidents (at work) where people read the first line, then comment "why didn't you do it this way?" to which his reply is "I did say I did it that way in the email."

People tune out listening all the time, imho it is easier to tune someone out audibly - we've got our own thoughts, maybe my tummy is rumbling in a threatening way or suddenly a thought came up about something I forgot, my attention gets suddenly shifted to an airplane roaring by loudly, etc. Now we've transferred that to tuning out people's written communication as well when we can choose better than ever which is important to us and to focus on that. Why are we not paying attention to something that is important enough to reply to but not to read? Is this the same phenomenon that causes some college students to TRY to get a C rather than all As in class?

Why would you not read something that you are interested in or would at least prevent you from looking like a fool?

I don't get it.

When I lived in Burlington, VT back in the 80's there was a fellow called the Pot Hole Bandit and he would plant trees in the pot holes in the streets of Burlington in the middle of the night. Of course they were not great fresh trees but he was trying to make a point and I suppose he did. It was great fun to discover the newest "tree" on the streets of Burlington. Ahhhhh...Vermont...

Hey all - I was in a high inensity aerobic class today at the gym and the women next to me had to stop and sit down. A few minutes later she came over to me and told me that she really didn't feel well. So i tried to help her walk around a little and gave her my water to drink (she had none). I was helping her walk around and she passed out hard. I kept her from falling hard on the ground and she quickly came around and we (the aerobic instructor and I) got her seated on a bench. She eventually came around and it seemed ok, but here's my question... Was there anything I could have done/imstructed her to do that would have kept her from passing out? I have always been told you aren't supposed to just sit down right after instense aerobic activity (don't actually even know why this is) but maybe this is the exception? I just felt very unprepared to help her and am looking for advice... Any EMTs or trainers out there?

Dear Lady who can't see her dog poo:

I understand sometimes leaving for a dog walk and not having a bag when the time comes that your dog goes poo. It happens. I think that most people have at one time left the house without a poo bag.

I am sure that you didn't think that someone was looking out a window watching your dog poo. My father and I happened to be in the kitchen watching dogs walk by and when we saw your dog do her business. We placed a bet on whether or not you would pick it up. I was rooting for you, I hoped that you would bend down and pick up the poo, but no, you turned and started to walk off.

I hope I didn't startle you by asking you out my window if you needed a poo bag. I am willing to share with those who forget. But what really got me was when I handed you the poo bags you told me that your dog didn't poo this time. I didn't want to tell you that we saw your dog poo because really who wants to admit that.

As my father was leaving to go to his car he did in fact find your dogs poo. I just wanted to let you know that yes your dog did take her afternoon poo and not to worry, he picked it up for you.

So Lady who can't see her dog poo, your neighbor in ballard cleaned up the poo this time.

Sincerely,
Your neighbor who has poo bags

I was dropping some mail off at the outside post office box. I didnt pull all the way up to the post office box. I was close by a foot or two. A lady in this mini van pulls up behind me. I got out to drop my mail in the box because I did not have anyone in the passenger side to put it in the mail box for me. She gets out of her car and she is ticked off and states why didnt you pull up all the way up to the box. I said because I need to get out and put my mail in the box. I told her to drop her attitude. That ticked her off. I got back in my car and she took her hand and tried to close my door!!! I had my hand on the door and she hurt it by trying to close my door. I didn't get her license plate because she was behind me and it was dark. I cannot believe this violence would occur in Ballard! Still very shocked by her attitude and how she handled it. I would of called the cops right away but it happened so fast. She was bigger than myself and I need to defend for myself so I shut the door and got in my vechicle and drove away. She was about 5'8", dark hair (brown) striaght medium lengeth and big build. I am so upset!

Gabriel's Fire - why didn't anyone tell me??

Just wanted to share with you, my neighbors, that we went to Gabriel's Fire for supper tonight (BBQ joint - 80th & 24th) and it was soooooo good.

I know it's not new but we kept forgetting about it, which is ridiculous as my Texan husband is serious about his BBQ and Seattle isn't exactly blessed with a wide selection to choose from.

I can't believe everyone hasn't been raving about this place. It's like a grand tour of regional BBQ, with not one but SEVEN different homemade sauces to choose from. Want your Texan-style? Your Carolina? Your KC? Sweet or vinegary? Mild or spicy? And the sides! Rich creamy mac & cheese. Thick smoky beans. Potato salad with dill. And do I really need to wax lyrical about the brisket? And the pulled pork? Ah, my arteries are pulsing in excitement. At least I think that's what they're doing. They might just be afraid - it's hard to tell...

Did I mention that this place delivers?

Sorry I have nothing to contribute about al fresco vagrant copulation or PMS at the post office. Just wanted to share my excitement at finding another small biz in the 'hood that I really really like. Yay Ballard!!

i'm in the market for a new dentist, and from reading other dentist threads i think i have it narrowed down to either Dr. Hackney or Dr. Chasen aka Dr. Reed. can current patients give me some more info?

do not want:
revolving-door assistants/hygenists, upsells during evaluations, prevalent advertising for cosmetic services in the office

do want:
gentle hands, a tolerant hygenist (i'm a bad flosser), and a front office that is good at record keeping

i'm also open to suggestions of other dentists in the "downtown Ballard" area if they fit. (if it helps, i used to go to Dr. Stone and really liked his practice on 57th St before it merged with another office further north. now that he appears to have retired, it's time to get out.)
