My husband has just returned home from the hospital. (He is doing very well following a heart valve replacement.) He would like to send a thank you gift to the nurses and staff at the cardiac ICU and SCU.

What might please the staff? I imagine they see enough flower arrangements?

    Food.
    Pizza, subs, homemade cookies.
Have a kid? Send them a drawing
    Balloons?
Oh, they make those neato fruit bouquets too.

Very thoughtful of him, glad he's okay : )

Thirding food, particularly food that's durable enough to last through a couple of shifts (e.g., chocolate, cookies). Depending on the rules in the ICU, they may not be able to have flowers around. Heck, at Children's, you can't even bring latex balloons into the building; mylar is more likely to be OK.

When we left the NICU at Swedish, I spent a bit of time composing a nice note to the NICU nurses. I heard from several of them afterwards that they found it touching. It probably didn't hurt that it came with a couple boxes of Chocolati chocolates.

The nurses from my wife's birthing center specifically requested cookies.

    Jersey Girl!

Glad to hear the hubby is home!!!

I brought the ICU folks homemade cookies (so they got something handmade from my efforts) and a big fruit basket of stuff that was a bit hard to find around here. They seemed to enjoy it. I also did something similar for the housekeeping staff who were always in and out without being noticed much. They were great folks and easily forgotten.

I am curious....did he manage to avoid the cardiac meatloaf? <grin>

Any form of a heartfelt thank you is going to be appreciated.

I like the Theo chocolate idea. If we send a few boxes, we can be sure to cover all the groups that helped -- different care shifts, and housekeeping.

    Dave,
There was no meatloaf. Hubby didn't like the food, so I brought most food from home. I agree about housekeeping at Northwest Hospital. They were so nice and helpful.

jersey.. If your medical insurance doesn't cover 100% make sure to ask for and fill out a charity application. If you do fill one out when you turn it in make sure to get the person's name so someone can be held accountable if they say never received it. It is worth a shot and during these times every little bit helps

As a cardiac RN, I can tell you that a combination of fruit & chocolate for each shift would be great. You can have it all delivered at once, just make sure each package is labeled with the specific shift you want to get it. Also, any specific staff members that were particularly helpful would greatly appreciate a note to their manager. I can tell you from personal experience that this goes a long way in a nurse's annual review. I'm sure they will appreciate whatever you decide on, it's very thoughtful of you to do this.
