(Newser) – Pabst Blue Ribbon is known as a cheap beer beloved by hipsters…in America. In China, it goes by “Blue Ribbon 1844,” gets compared to Scotch, and will run you $44 a bottle. Gawker points to the beer’s official website—where you can see the fancypants bottle it’s packaged in, a far cry from the familiar PBR cans found in the US. (1844, by the way, is the year the Pabst Brewing Company was founded.)

Chinese media blog Danwei points to an ad for the beer from a business magazine, reading, “It's not just Scotch that's put into wooden casks. There's also Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer 1844,” and going on to call Pabst “truly a treasure among beers.” Need more evidence of PBR world domination? My neighbor told me this the other day and I almost fell over. I have to find an inexpensive way to ship to China. It is truly amazing what people will pay for some things.

Yeah, this story came out last year and has been debunked. It's not the same beer, not even close. Here are the details on Blue Ribbon 1844:

Alan Kornhauser, who started his brewing career at Jos. Huber, and subsequently worked at Anchor Brewing Co., Portland Brewing Co., August Schell and elsewhere, now works for Pabst in China six months of each year. Interestingly, he reports that Pabst China has started expanding its horizons beyond Blue Ribbon. "We just produced China's first real specialty beer, an all-malt, reddish brown strong (15.7 plato) ale, dry hopped with Cascade (38 IBU) and aged in new uncharred American whiskey barrels," Mr. Kornhauser reports. "It's being bottled in a nice looking 720-ml brown bottle with an enamel label and it is called Blue Ribbon 1844, a reference to Pabst's founding date. It will only be sold in China, and it's going to sell for over $20 a bottle!"

Rudy..Thanks for the heads up. I had a hard time understanding a phenom for regular PBR at such steep prices. The explanation you found makes alot more sense.

I'm just glad that nobody is paying $44/bottle for PBR. :)

If you wanted me to drink a bottle or can of that crap, $ 44 would not be enough.

Hey Rudy, do you drive an old BMW with vanity tags?

Would $50 do it? I do not drive a BMW with vanity plates. Is there a Rogue Rudy running around?

Indeed there is. His tag's say RUDY. I was reluctant to mention that becuase if it were you, one of your fan club might get the notion to follow you. Still I thought I should ask, becuase for a minute we both go to OHC.

Yeah, that's not me. I don't think my buddies would let me hear the end of it if I had that plate.

Why because it would not coordinate well with your cut mirror necklace that says Rudy in a big bold font?

It really makes wonder when I see kids drinking PBR. But I guess I didn't have good taste when I was young either. We used to drink Malt Liquor cause it got you drunk faster! Do they still even make that stuff?

Sunset.. The only time I ever tried Malt Liquor was when I first moved here. I purchased a case of Mickey's thinking it was an Irish beer and after a few noticed my personality change in a way I never acted. I dumped the remaining beers down the drain.

Having spent too much time in China and drinking Tsingtao (at about .50$US / 32oz)any beer is better and would comand a high price, water is not a real option there.

The people who market Pabst do a great job. It's just a cheap beer. Don't be hating!
