I would like to hire 1 or 2 laborers to help me get caught up with various projects around my home. Work will include painting, cleaning, yard work, and some light demo. Current thinking is every Saturday in July except the 2nd. If interested email with a brief description of skills/history, $/hr required, and references if you have them.

    Thanks
    Joe

I always assume that job postings that don't list a salary are sketchy. It's like going to a store and seeing "Make an offer" on the price sticker. I remember when my boyfriend was working at an early version of Best Buy, and foreign shoppers would come in and try to dicker on the prices. We used to laugh at that. We thought it was so funny! That was a long time ago.

Requiring the applicant to give a salary is a not-very-subtle signal that you are targeting your ad to people who are culturally conditioned to dicker for everything. In other words, "Americans need not apply".

This message is not really intended for JoeInBallard, since he knows what he is doing - it is more targetted to people who read the posting, and fell uncomfortable, but don't know why. It took me a few minutes to be able to identify my discomfort, and I decided to post that recognition.

Sven-When I would bartend at my parents place in Buffalo the Canadians would always try to barter on the price of beer and food. I was like WTF the price is what it is.

EVERYTHING is negotiable. I think americans are just to afraid to ask for a reasonable price on something that's clearly a ripoff.

(edit: not implying your labatts blue was overpriced buffhawk, I mean in general).

Honestly the last few years I have learned to barter. I needed the home computer fixed so the neighbor did me a favor. I in turn helped them out in others ways. It is all good. There is alot more people can do for eachother that doesn't involve cold hard cash.

@Sven: FYI, you completely took my post out of context. My thought is to hire a couple of local high school or college kids looking to make a little $ in their time off. Pay should depend on skills, as anyone who has been in the workforce for any amount of time knows all too well. If I was targeting non-Americans I would have driven up to home depot. There was nothing in the post about dickering.

I think Americans are great. I am one.

I'm not sure that a Kitty is what I am looking for.

Does anyone know how to get this question mark off of my head?

Go to Home Depot and hire a couple of day laborers. I hire from there frequently with great results.

Joe, find (create) an avatar in order to get rid of the question mark on your head.
