So any time a pet store (who is active in working with local organizations in getting homes for unwanted pets) gives out pet treats, that is bad because there are hungry children in the world?

I'd go if I wasn't at work. I don't even have a dog but the store has been great to me when I have bought things for the cats.

Briar Rose: Let me guess: Raised Catholic?

I'm a huge bleeding heart Liberal. But why piss on a local business' ice cream social? Must we wait til ALL human suffering is eliminated before letting our hair, and that of our pets, down?

I'm a big fan of All The Best, the folks that work there, and the good they do with cat adoptions, etc. Sure, their target audience is a couple notches above the Proletariat class, but, that's Market Street for ya.

Briar Rose, beloved neighbor, in all seriousness: Ask your Dr. about SSRI's.

...and folks wonder why businesses leave Ballard.

Probably in shame too, for not feeding all the starving children in the world. I always thought it should be the first line of any business' mission statement.

I'd even settle for them treating me like BriarRose would, as long as they give everything to the children.

    /sarcasm.

I tend to agree with BR quite a bit, actually. This one though just seemed so random and out of nowhere.

A good business (to me) tries to make the community a better place. Since All The Best is a pet supply store, it stands to reason that's where their involvement would be. The cats there actually have a pretty awesome deal, much better than being in a cage at a shelter. I also think their sales people are pretty great, which is a bonus.

I just don't get where starving children fit into it at all. I suppose I ought to be guilty as I buy my cat's prescription food, watch TV (that we pay for), use my home computer, etc.

If I had a dog, I bet that dog would be all over doggie ice cream :)

If only the golden retreiver was ready for an ice cream social! She'd be knocking over a lot of ice cream in an effort to be friendly. But it does sound like a good time, and All the Best has done a lot for different animal charities. Plus their connection to Purrfect Pals. I hope the pups all had fun tonigt! That is what it's all about.

teigyr, I thought that BR's comment was random, I jumped for fun, I work with at risk and homeless youth and, sometimes folks need to be reminded that there are problems here also, not just "in the world". I spend time with my dogs and I find them, at times, to be more compassionate and insightful then people. So I would have gone to the Ice cream social but my baby mal, a rescue, is not that social yet.

I did not desire to cause any distress.

    Rich, you were fine :)

I think there are so many problems in the world like unwed mothers, starving children, and abandoned pets. I also think that spay/neuter would be a big help in the above mentioned areas but I realize my opinions might not be popular.

We all help out where we can. I tend to lean more toward animal causes because my forte is NOT children/youth. I figure if we all help out in our general interests and strengths, the world will be a better place.

I don't think anyone at my work is unemployed. I'm ALL for helping the homeless. I don't think the fact that you do give you any right to criticize others tho. shouldn't you be out there right now? It must be real nice to have all this leisure time when there are kids who are hungry.

teigyrYes, imagine all the problems that there would be if everyone focused on only one thing, that one thing would be a huge government project and nothing would get done, we all need to do what we can and are willing to do. I also watch TV, use my computer, play with my animals, spend time with my wife, go to shows and so on, otherwise I would be more crazy than I am.

I find that moments of joy and pleasure in my life (like an ice cream social for dogs) helps me continue my work with desperate young children. BR even those of us whose lives are dedicated to children need moments of levity.

I think many here are bitter that the 'delicious and nutritious ice cream treats' were for dogs only, and not people.

I mean, come on, who wouldn't want an ice cream treat on a hot day that was billed as both 'delicious' and 'nutritious'? how exactly do they achieve this?
did any of you humans go and sneak one for yourself as I would've done?

Some of us who used to post a lot don't anymore because of posts from people like BR which are downright depressing. Give us a break already. The original post was a positive invitation to get together with beloved pets for free dog ice cream. What the h is wrong with that?! Hope those of you attended this event had fun and thanks for the invite All the Best! Sweet idea and I'll check out your store soon.

It is misfortunate that someone would try and shame a business for having an event that brings together a community. They were not charging for the ice cream treats it was their way of celebrating the amazing dogs of Ballard.

All The Best Pet Care is a store that caters to the best nutrition, toys and treats for cats and dogs. They are not UNICEF! However if you would like to get down to it they donate thousands to Animal Welfare causes not to mention to the Ballard Food Bank and local schools! They are not responsible for feeding the children of the world.BriarRose your statement was ludicrous.

I attended the event and the reason they are billed as delicious and nutritious is they are made with only natural ingredients. They're 98% lactose free, fortified with whey protein, and enriched with live active yogurt cultures. Works as a pro-biotic!

Thank You All The Best Pet Care !!

Better that they donate thousands to people in need aux. Pets are great but people are much more important.

Whew, this was an exhausting thread. Kind of like a car accident, I couldn't look away. Well, I could have if my Netflix streaming was working. Anyway, to get back to the original post - not that all the other points weren't valid and interesting (how's that for being wishy washy enough to hopefully not accrue angry posts from anyone) - I just missed the social because I saw the post at exactly two minutes after it was over. I wonder if all the best has an email list so that we could find out about their cool events ahead of time.
As far as starving children, I have a little box theory. Because thoughts of the bad things that happen in the world can be overwhelming, when I start to make myself crazy thinking about all the beings I want to save I remember to go back to my little box - it includes my family, animals, friends, charities I've chosen, and staying aware of random things that may come up each day that I can do for people and animals and that's it. It seems that no matter what you do, you can't fix it all so I do my best to keep enjoying life in spite of that fact. Wow, don’t I sound trite. I really need to get my streaming fixed.
