So, I have all kinds of birds coming to the feeders in my yard: jays, sparrows, wrens, thrushes, finches, chickadees, tohees, flickers, pigeons, crows, but I just saw a bird that I have never seen.

It looks just like a sparrow (small, brown) but it did not have any kind of a tail. It looked exactly like a teeny chicken. It flew away before I could take a photo.

    What the heck?

sometimes birds lose their tail feathers when escaping a cat. My mom's great kiskadee lacked one for a few months. Have that camera ready!

Perhaps one of our local wren species? Many times their tails can sort of "disappear" depending on their posture. And some wren species have very short tails to start with which just adds to the "no tail" sightings.

As the King of all Ballard pigeons i could easily identify your feathered mystery. But I need a photo, otherwise you can forget it.

May be the Seattle Public Library could help. They have the Birds of North America online, but you need a library card. https://ezproxy.spl.org/login?qurl=http%3a%2f%2fbna.birds.cornell.edu%2fbna%2f

Have you seen more than one? Say three or four or a flock all without tails?

    Edit to say:
Half of my neighbor's chickens don't have tails because of some weird inter-chicken politics or pecking order.
