At a little after 6pm on Tuesday evening, June 30, 2009, sadly, Ballard Camera closed it's doors after over 60 years in Ballard. A victim of Digial Photography and the ecomony according to one of the owners.

A small crowd of people was still there at 6pm, searching for discounted inventory items.

I took some great photos of the owner shutting the doors for the last time.

Which I could upload those photos here.

It is really sad. They sure could appreciate my old Nikkormat...wherever in my house it is now..

I've been going there for 24 years, but, only one time in the past few years, to look for those slide mounts for those teeny tiny Kodak 110 slides from the 70's. Remember those?

The "new" owners (probably been 10 years or more) sure did a lot to try and keep the place going in the path of the oncoming digital tsunami.

You always hear about businesses such as this finding creative ways to stay in business. They add an online component or try expanding into niche areas that others cannot match, etc. I often read so many of these success stories that it's easy to forget how rare it is that a business can make such a change. I guess the news of all the businesses closing in this intersection is a reminder that it's not as easy to run a business as it seems on the surface.

Sorry to see them go, though when you boil it down the 3 businesses that have closed in that intersection have been a flag store, a camera/film developing store, and a book store.

Old Norveegen, if you email your photos to tips@myballard.com, the Swedes might post them.
