I slept through most of this, but it sounds like a bunch of teens in a van have been active this morning blowing up garbage cans and mailboxes, as well as breaking out car windows.

It seems to be occurring in Northeast Ballard, I've heard addresses like 70th at 8th and Fremont Avenue at 92nd.

More details as I hear them.

So maybe it wasn't a car that hit the garbage can on NW 17th. That would explain the bits in my front yard.

It's certainly kids blowing up mailboxes with pipe bombs of some sort. They blew up my mailbox around 1:15Am and sent it flying 50 feet into the street.

Cops were called, and they indicated a number of other mailboxes were hit. We heard at least two other loud explosions shortly after.

This is disturbing. We have some youth that have way too much time, and no positive interests. I'd bet that they video taped their exploits as well.
Keep an eye out for u-tube, you'll probably see your mailbox going bye-bye.

I'm guessing that they are using M-80s rather than pipe bombs. Pipe bombs require work to make. M-80s just require an allowance.

It sounds like sparkler bombs to me, M80's haven't been sold to the general public in years in this state.

GregD, they haven't been sold legally, but I can guarantee you that they have been and are being sold here...a lot.

SPG, even if they were real M80's vs the common similar labeled small firecrackers it wouldn't have enough power to blow apart a recycle bin like that. 2 ounces of flash powder just isn't that strong. Sparkler bombs are all the rage with kids these days, they are very loud and very powerful.

Apparently it's a federal crime to blow up a mailbox.

I just read that on kirotv.com.

Hmmm, these kids are in some trouble.

For waaaaaay more information than you really want on this subject, see:

What is an M-80, and why can't I buy one?

Wow, just as I was reading this thread I heard a large explosion outside. Sound like someone is pushing their luck.

When I was a little kid the big thing was to throw firecrackers and cherry bombs into empty trash cans to make a bigger BOOM sound. It usually didn't blow up the can since we didn't have m80's that sumer. A couple of kids from my school were doing this in the industrial section of town when one of the 55 gallon drums they thought was empty had just enough of some chemical in the bottom to create a fireball that blasted up to the roof of the loading dock and back down the wall severely burning one of the kids. That fad pretty much ended after having to see a kid with third degree burns around town all the time.
