I am looking around for apartments and Ballard really has EVERYTHING we are looking for.
I was looking at the Lock Vista apartments but all I've heard about them is that you can hear everything!
So I'm looking around and found this: http://www.seattlerentals.com/Ballard/apartment/15898#
    an apartment called Scandia Villa?

I cant find much info about it.
Does anyone know anything about that apartment complex? that street? anything at all?
I'm moving from Georgia and won't be able to see the apartment till we get there so I'm trying to get as much info as possible.

24th is one of the main North/South streets, and the #18 bus goes up/down it. I believe there's a stop near that building. So, if your apartment is on the 24th side of the building, you're going to get car and bus noise. Still within walking distance of "downtown" ballard (tho uphill back home!). Easy bus access to downtown Seattle, the #18 all the way.

I don't know the building itself.

24th St (the street with all the cars on it in the Street View image) is the main north/south arterial route, so be prepared for traffic noise. That location is about ten blocks up the hill (north) of Besalu bakery and the new QFC grocery store; another few blocks south gets you to Market St, the main east/west drag.

The building looks like a typical 1970s relatively small apartment building -- there are a lot of those in that general area. Remember that we're way up north here, so if you like sun, get windows on the south side of a building and vice versa if you don't. Many apartments here are heated by electric baseboard or in-wall heaters, because they don't cost very much and electricity used to be ridiculously cheap. It's still pretty cheap compared to the rest of the country, but the City-owned utilities have been jacking up the electricity, water, sewer, and trash rates over the last ten years in part to support political ideologies and the voters haven't stopped them yet, so it'll probably continue (my editorial). Don't forget to ask for a ballpark idea of what the winter electricity bills are, and if there are any other charges (such as for a storage unit).

If there's really no way you can get a cheap ticket and fly out for a few days to cruise the area, I'd try to spend some hours virtually cruising the area on Street View. Figure that you'll probably have only one parking space assigned in the apartment building, and you might have to pay extra for that, so if you're planning on getting around by bus, use the Metro website and Google to figure out what routes you'd use to commute and for other frequent trips.

We're in a phase of low vacancies/increasing rents right now, so don't count on the current rent staying the same after the end of the initial lease term. However, at least by then you'll know the area a lot better. Good luck with your search!

I live on 24th south of there and drive by/walk by/bike by frequently. While there is traffic noise, it is a "quiet" part of 24th. I don't see people hanging out there or crowds. Have not noticed any of the neighborhood transients up that far north on 24th. I would think, based on location and neighborhood, that Scandia Villa would be quieter and more livable than Lock Vista. Do ask about electric bills, but generally the electric bills here in Seattle are lower than other parts of the country.

"I don't see people hanging out there or crowds."

definitely a lot less since they repaced the food bank with a montessori preschool right around there.

Hey, even I will say it is nicer to live next to a montessori preschool than a foodbank. Also the reasons the transients no longer make it that far north.

For better or worse, power is cheap in Seattle. I just pulled a Jan. Seattle City Light bill and compared it to a summertime bill. Bills come every other month, BTW. On the average, figured high, I pay some $20/mo. Electric everything. One bedroom apt. 1968 building. Big south facing windows help, and I live on the 3rd floor so I suck up a little heat that way. No a/c, few folks in western Cascadia have them. I run fans at night when it gets hot, for us that's 65 degrees and up! :) Mgr is Dave Poletti, google his business, I have only good words for him.

Personally, I wouldn't consider 70th as walking distance to downtown ballard. If you like long walks, sure, but once you get there you'll have to walk around and then you'll have to walk back up hill. And it is certainly not stumbling distance from the downtown bars. Of course, this keeps the drunks away.

I am one of those people who have an a/c unit, btw. they are useful if you have pets and since I'm a NW native, I can't stand heat over 85. IIRC, our electricity bill is 150-200 for a 2 month billing cycle, but we've got more electrical appliance than most folks. We have oil heat.

Generally, the summer is the worst time to find a rental vacancy here, so you're right on doing it in the middle of winter.

A woman who works with me used to live in the apt bldg across 75th from there. She says it's pretty quiet, and a good walking neighborhood (about a mile to 24th and Market), but she's young and runs 5K events. The Ballard Food Bank recently moved out of the building across 24th. She brought her Clearwire (wireless) internet connection with her, and that didn't work out there, so she opted for something else. Buses are pretty convenient for shopping at the QFC. I have to admire you for trying to rent an apartment without having set foot in it. Good luck.

nehkita - you aren't entering into a lease for an apartment before you see it in person for yourself are you? If you are handing over a processing deposit, it is best to sign an Agreement to Enter Into Lease - this document will (1) give you a receipt for your payment and (2) outlines the conditions under which you can all or a portion of your process deposit back, if the place is not up to your expectations. Second, you need to review in detail the apartment with the owner/agent using a Property Condition Checklist to make note of any defects, broken items, stains, lousy water pressure, slow drains, missing light bulbs, etc. This walk through is your opportunity to get a commitment to have items repaired.

Be sure to find out if you will be billed for water, sewer & garbage - not all places do this.

ballard sure has some odd named apartment buildings.

it's probably quite nice, but I'd have a hard time telling people I lived in the 'scandia villa'

there's lots of other 'nordic' this-or-thats as you might imagine, but my favorites are the ones with a girl's name: 'the danielle', 'the abigail', etc.

I like the ones with guys names - there's a place called Steve's apartments by the Kentucky Fried Chicken on Market I believe.

Good luck with your search nehkita. Personally I would say 70th is definitely walking distance to downtown Ballard.

lakereitz - I love the Abigail's paint job too. Makes me want to see the insides. I think 70th to Market is easily walkable. And if you don't like going uphill on the way home, it is easy to just hop on the #18.

I think the Abigail might have some applied butterflies, too, unless I'm thinking of another place.

70th & 24th is right on the cusp of walking to Ballard proper. you need to give yourself a little time--say 15 minutes to walk down to the QFC (or like a 3 minute bikeride, but that's a known danger many of us remember). the heart of Ballard (Bergen Place) is probably a 20 minute stroll.

GI - I think I've seen an apt bldg with butterflies. They are attached to bldg, not painted right? It's not The Abigail - I just walked by 'her' this morning. I might alter my walk home route until I find the butterfly building.

H2O Girl - I've noticed Steve's Apartments before. The name is simplicity at its best.

I think you're correct, lakreitz. I know I've seen those giant butterflies applied to the side of some building and I think it's close to the Abigail. Let me know if you find it!

there's similar giant insects and such applied to the back of Adams Elementary, but it doesn't look as bizarre as it does on an apartment.

I just remembered another local favorite (on the corner of 65th &3 2nd), the 'Burning Tree' or something like that, complete with a charred stump on the lawn.
