I know there are a million storage rental places. I've never rented storage before. Any recommendations?

I need to store some framed art and furniture. None of it is super-valuable, but it's important to me. I want dry clean space with good security.
I'm willing to go as far north as Everett, if the rent is cheaper.

There have been a couple of threads on that topic here in the last couple of years - check 'em out. Personally, I like (and use) People's Storage down Leary Way.

I recommend anywhere you can keep an eye on your stuff. Cautionary tale: a famous photographer of my acquintance had a storage unit on Bainbridge Island. Full of furniture, paintings, file cabinets of photos...and some very pricey artwork. (Mark Tobey, Morris Graves, etc.) Well, one Friday I had lunch with her. On Saturday, another friend was in an antique store in Pioneer Square, and overheard a woman selling the owner a photo album of aforementioned famous photographer...claiming that they were from an estate sale.

As friend B. KNEW that artist A. was NOT deceased, he called me. I called the cops, and the artist. They did a sting operation at the antique store...and got back @90% of the stuff.

So how was the unit raided? Turns out the miscreants simply rented a unit at the same place, and with bolt cutters, cleaned out other units at their leisure. And since the owner didn't check on the unit often, it could have gone unoticed on for quite some time. It was only the sheerest luck (good for the photographer, bad for the crooks) that someone noticed .

    Hey JerseyGirl,
I also went with People's Storage and had a great experience. Here was a thread about storage units a while ago:

Another +1 for People's Storage. My experience was from 2009 - they were very nice. Clean units and facility.

Thanks to all for your replies. I will certainly check out Peoples Storage.

Jules, that is quite a story. I'm glad the artist got most of his stuff back.

Just following up. I rented a locker at Peoples Storage. Very impressed with the facility and staff. I'm glad I asked about it here on the forum.

After checking them out, i've found them to be a little bit pricey along with the other local storages around Ballard. I think I will be going back with Door to Door storage. They have a 5 x 8 storage that holds about a room and a half for around $60 a month and $99 to bring the storage to your location and back. When you need it back, they just drive it back to you. I know last time I put a room full of boxes, I hardly filled it. Sheesh, with how much storage units cost in Ballard and around Seattle, I should go into the storage business lol d:)

wow - I did see an article a few years ago about how the storage business is booming in the US and location owners were raking in the money.
