Helen Grace "Haun" Coale Patterson, 6/27/1947 - 2/13/2012
BHS class of 1964, beautiful beyond beauty inside and out. She was a free spirit that lived her life on her own terms, mostly on the Mendocino coast where she knew everyone and everyone knew her. She mesmerized generations with her grace, charm and incredible beauty... RIP gorgeous...

OG - so sorry for you and your family. My oldest brother just passed away on the 1st of this month so I know intimately what you are feeling right now. It's amazing the ways in which losing a sibling alters the universe - I have never felt so mortal. Your sister was clearly lovely in more ways than one. Remember to take care of yourself too right now - it's easy to be caught unawares by life at times like this. Best to you and yours.

Thank you one and all, only wish you all could have known her. She succumbed to Alzheimers, took almost twelve years to do its dirty work.
BTW, she was Ballard Hi Class of 1965, not 1964, my bad...
She was really one of a kind, a Unicorn so to speak, non- Magsy- type...

Memorial set for March 24/25 at Albion River Inn, Mendocino County, CA... a celebration of her amazing life, am trying to write a chronology by then, know I can never do it justice but will give it all I have, anyone down this way is graciously invited to attend.

So sorry to read of your loss of your sister - both now, and earlier, to Alzheimers.
Albion River Inn is such a lovely and peaceful place. I've stayed there several times, and will picture you there, honoring your sister.

Malia, she worked there in the 80s and 90s, just about ran the place for a while, everybody knew and loved (or lusted for) her, if you go anywhere on the Mendocino coast and say the name "Haun", you'll probably get a smile and a "oh yeah, Haun, how's she doing?" Some very dear friends are arranging everything for the end of March memorial, hope I can finish my writing by then.

    Dear Old Guy,

Haun and I worked together for the first 5 years that the Albion River Inn was open. I was the head Chef. My name is Greg Winslow.
I adored your sister... she was indeed a gem and a wonderful friend and co worker. I have many fond memories of her and our times together. I was just recently down there at the Inn, and asked how she was doing. Flurry and I have stayed in touch over the years, and I had be aware of Haun's condition.
I am very sorry for your loss...she has been in my thoughts for the past few days. I lost my brother a few years ago. I know how hard it can be to lose a sibling. Your case is extra hard because she had actually been gone for a while due to her illness.

I don't know if we will be able to get down there for the memorial. We live in Eugene Oregon. We recently had serious flooding at our property and are still trying to recover from that. Hopefully we will be able to go, only time will tell.

Once again my heart goes out to you and your family, Haun will be forever missed and loved......

Had just a wonderful memorial service Saturday at the Albion River Inn, many thanks to gracious hosts Peter and Flurry, a lot more of my sister's wonderful friends including five or six of her old boyfriends, just a great time...
Looked at so many old photos my eyes are still bloodshot...
Here's an old one... from around 1958...

    Hi oldguybc

I am so sorry to hear of Haun's passing. You may (or may not) remember me. I was The Haun's good friend from the pony farm, and spent many wonderful hours and adventures with her! I probably even have some of those outrageously long and silly letters we used to send each other! I decided to try to find her after all these years, so two days ago I looked for her on-line. I am so saddened to find that she has left us! I hope you check this post occasionally, so perhaps you can respond to my posting. I don't know which brother you are, but I know she loved all of you dearly! As we all loved her. The Tass.

Tass! Migawd, how are you? It has been so very long... of course I remember you, how very wonderful and nice to hear from you, you were part of the magic kingdom that was my sister and her friends, such a very sweet, loving and unique bunch of free thinkers and great people.
I am Billy, "Catalina"... love to hear more from you.

    Hi Billy,

I tried to send an email to your address, but it failed to go through and was rejected, so I will just paste my email to you here....don't know what is wrong with your email address, but my computer don't seem to like it.

I'm so glad you checked on the post about Haun! I am not sure which brother you are....older? two older, one younger? or are you the younger??? I am obviously a little confused! But I spent so many happy hours at your house and just enjoyed Haun so much! I feel so sad about missing her. so tragic. but actually she would not want us to feel that way. We should just celebrate her life and the wonderful memories we have of her. We still use the "you like zat bunny?" phrase quite often, as I shared it with my 3 sons. There are so many, many things I carry with me from my friendship with The Haun.

Where are you living? Are you in Ballard? I am still living where I have been since 1973. Why move? I have 3 sons, youngest one is married and has 4 small boys....ages 7, 6, 5 and 2. I am a busy grandma! They live nearby, so I see them often. In fact, the oldest one just started taking riding lessons where I ride....yes, I still love horses and started riding again 2 years ago....sort of a long or at least ironic story there. I wasn't sure if I could even still get on a horse! But I can, and ride twice a week (social security money needs to be spent, right?).

Anyway, I am so happy to hear from you! Please bring me up to date on your family and what's been happening over the last 45 years! (my 50th high school reunion is next week...that may be why I was especially thinking of Haun... how I used to take the bus to Seattle after school on Fridays and we'd hang around and how much fun we had at the fair, etc....my email address: cec6320@clearwire.net

    Fondly,
    Tass
