FYI - From Seattle Police Crime Prevention
    206-684-7711
"Friday, Feb. 24 and Saturday, Feb. 25th the U.S. Army will be firing cannons off between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. both days. On Friday, Ft. Lawton will be involved in a practice firing, and on Saturday Ft. Lawton will be conducting its closing ceremony. We hope this information can be shared as to alleviate fear, anxiety and a flood of 9-1-1 calls."

This was sent to me from our block watch captain. Please tell your neighbors and Ballard friends.

Glad I checked the Forum. What a disconerting racket if you didn't know what it was. Once you do know: kinda cool.

it's too bad they use blanks.

how neat would it be if they put some old yacht in the bay and shot real cannon balls at it.
    maybe the Kalakala?

    The Kalakala is a treasure!
The booms did get all of the pigeons aloft on Market Street.

  11. Correction: The Kalakala is a listing rusting piece of junk that will never get fixed. The supposed mystery man who bought it for a dollar doesn't exist as far as the Coast Guard has been able to tell. I say target practice would be a fitting end for it. 50 points if you can get a cannonball through one of the portholes!

How about a treasured memory. It made the best waves on Alki when you were sitting and freezing your butt off in an inner tube.

Quite loud from Ballard just above the Locks. I could see the smoke but not the cannons. My dog didn't like it, I think he thinks it is a new holiday like July 4th poor guy.
A little bit of excitement for the poor herons that roost just bellow the firing line. It looked like they all took to the air after the first round.

No need for "cannons" at Ft Lawton any more. They'll probably be put out as surplus.

This may be a cheap opportunity to outfit the Kalakala at her ugliest with a bunch of those cannons sticking out of every porthole for use as a horrifically intimidating maritime law enforcement vessel. Some broken moldy windows on the bridge would help, too.

All in good fun of course. Especially when you see her bearing down on you right out of a fog bank. In the dark.

Okay, Enough with the frikin cannon firing!!!

Mrs, G was out walking the pooch today and tells me he just about jumped out of his fur!!!!
I'm pretty sure the dog on the main page also freaked out because of it.

Can we just say okay that was fun (for very few) and get on with the closure part?

Pastafarian is right. Unfortunately, the Kalakala has become a decrepit, rusting liability that is ultimately going to cost taxpayers a lot of money to deal with, because the owner obviously can't afford to deal with it.
