posting here because i cannot register to QA site.

i work near the top of queen anne hill, and have for many years. anyone who has spent much time around that area (near starbucks, safeway, etc) has probably seen John at some point - he is a homeless man who has lived there for a seriously long time. he frequently talks to himself, quite animated at times, but could also remember your name after one or two times...sweeps the sidewalk in front of all the best pet care, etc during the warmer months, kept to himself and was not a threat or ever violent. he wouldn't have lived up there so long if this was an issue.

anyway, Johnny hasn't been seen since last wednesday. a coworker saw police officers and another man with some sort of document speaking to him - my coworker seemed to think they were telling him to leave (his sleep area). nobody has seen him since.

his was fairly ill a week or so ago and several of us are very concerned. i am asking if anyone has any ideas of what happened, his whereabouts, etc. many people look out for him and are quite aware of his absence.

    thank you.

    Eric,

Any chance there is a photo posted of him somewhere you could refer us to? I rarely get to upper queen anne (it is a slog on a bike <grin>) but I am down along lower queen anne and downtown and along westlake a lot and can watch for him if I have a clue what he looks like.

From your description of him, the fact that he had been ill and a police office/man with a document, I am thinking he may have been involuntarily committed. If you have a full name and a persuasive personality you may be able to find out where he is. I would start at Harbourview.

Edited to add: Usually they can't/won't commit someone whose doing "well" on the streets but if he was also ill and some concerned individual called the powers that be...It happens. If he was at HV and released they may have sent him to St Martin de Porres.

cate, he had been to the hospital the weekend previous.

i spoke with west precinct tonight and they did not have record of the situation; i am quite sure there were police interacting with him, i figured there would be some record of the interaction.

a very kind person would take him into his home to bathe and has checked (apparently) with the hospitals and some shelters. i will try harborview even though i assume this fellow has already tried.

i wondered to myself if maybe the hospital visit was connected. all his belongings and bedding are still in place which leads me to believe it was not a complaint from neighbors or a business. neither would have been likely as he has lived in the area for a really long time...

i do not have a pic but as i said, anyone in that general area likely knows this man.

Eric - check St Martin de Porres. Often older men (50+) on the street who are ill are taken there to recover. Also contact Craig Rennebohem at the Mental Health Chaplaincy - he often just knows these things and where his "flock" are.

    Eric,

Got registered and posted your note with an explanation at about 8:30 Tuesday night, March 6. I will keep an eye on it and let you know through your post here if anyone responds. And of course, even though you can't post there yet you can read their forum at least.

    Hope this helps.

Eric, I had to do kind of a double take when I saw that you were the author of this post. Given that you are normally an outspoken opponent of people who are trying to help the homeless in Ballard, it was surprising to see that you were so concerned about this individual.

A quick search of your profile finds the following posts on the topic of homelessness in Ballard:

so, cd, when are you having the open house for the poor "bums" at your place? there must be something you could do at your home...

i'm serious - you are so passionate (annoying?) about this, i can only imagine how happy you'd feel to open up your home to these folks.

so, what are you going to do for them, and when?

so strange that the city is jamming the car camper issue exclusively into Ballard.

also strange - why do the churches need tax dollars to do this? if they and their loving congregations are so into the idea, why are they not responsible for it? pass the hat and all.

i do have empathy for people but clearly Ballard is and will become even more a destination for homeless. not just the cuddly "down-on-their-luck" ones but the folks who are dangerous, unstable, and offer nothing to the community besides empty bottles, feces, etc.

the arguement that "not all homeless are marauding drunks, etc" is very simply countered with "not all homeless are kindly down-on-their-luck folks who you'd want for a neighbor".

Isn't it interesting how when you actually get to know someone they cease to be the "them" that are easily stereotyped. Anyway, I hope your friend is OK.

Ernie, big difference between those we recognize, look out for, even miss, like stinky Ron and crazy Mary, and becoming a destination for them intentionally. imo.

thanks dave. looks like i can register now (thanks swedes) but you have done what i intended to do.

ernie, it is not a black and white world. lots of grey areas. thats all i care to say at this point. do you have any info relevant to John?

the intention of this thread is to find out info about John, not to debate. if need be, i'll attempt to have it removed now that the info is on the QA site where it may be more helpful.

It's not a black and white world, we're in agreement on that!

Eric, you've been around long enough to know that the intention of a thread has nothing to do with where it goes. You shouldn't have a problem getting it deleted though.....
