how do other adult men 'play?'

Ok, so I'm just realizing that there is really no play in my life, and hasn't been for years. When the weather's decent I like playing badminton, walking, being out doors, exploring new areas, hiking and backpacking. But as for fun physical play, other than rolling around with my innumerable cats on occasion, I got....nuthin'. It's suddenly striking me how out of balance and unhappy this feels.

What do you other fair to middling aged dudes (I'm insert number between 35 and 50 here) do for fun when your body says keep away from high-impact sports because it doesn't want your joints to implode on themselves? Running for frisbees is great when my hemorrhoid problem isn't acting up. I tried the P90X thing and it's fun, but I torqued my foot doing it so am wary to try it again. This sounds fun - a friend wants to go skydiving (plummeting?) but I can't pin him down on a day yet. Any grown-up play circles out there?

So.... what's the point of this thread, exactly? To make fun of somebody else
asking a sincere question? People can be such dicks.

I didn't see the "gal" version of this post until just now. Although this post seems sort of odd, I certainly couldn't resist playing the game. If you are looking for sincerity, MyBallard is not that place. ;)

Momnballard, I had that same thought about Thomas C. A little suspect... :-)

98107, I wasn't referring to you as a dick, sorry. It was the OP. Plus it's newly gratifying to say that to somebody when they deserve it - oh, the freedoms that menopause can bring.

Midwest your dream might be closer than you know. See you are dreaming too big, and too small. Very few homes in Ballard can handle more than a 15 watt 1x10.

(Don't tell anyone but in reality my LP is an Epiphone, and my AC30 is an Amplug)

And when I turn off my headphones and open my eyes, the Olympic Stadium in Berlin disappears, my would tour ends, and in the morning I get to drive my son to daycare.

No peanut allergy here. Just don't have the 2,200 plus for the real thing. And can't see the value of dropping that much, if I'm running it through a microamp.

edog-paying 2200 doesn't make it any more real, trust me.

I toyed around with a guitar from behind a glass case after hours with my primary guitar dealer.

"you're asking 12 grand for this??"

"...uh...yeah, but...those frets are gold plated, dude."

    -pause-

    "So...if I do this...maybe twice...it's like, 2 grand less, right??"

    ..."sold."

Money isn't always placed well for music, regrettably.

I still use an echoplex, yeah, good old Les Paul, been through four reconditioned reels so far, every time I get it redone, I get offered another digital option. It just isn't close.

Ask an organ player why he still drags a Leslie around. Won't drop a name here...

Have you ever carried a Hammond B-3 with both Leslies? Those suckers are HEAVY (man). Been there, done that. True, they sound unique in their special way. Just helps to be able to afford roadies..!

I've played a number of LPs recently thinking I might take the jump. Only one in seven made me smile and hit me in that primal spot where you feel the goodness more than your mind can say. The other six felt like really cheap crap. Sure no two are the same, but as much as they cost, the odds should be better, the variance should not be so wide, and the differences should be between different desirable tonal qualities, not nice or crappy.

Well, in defense of LP, I'd seek for used before I'd pay for new. In the 80's they turned, mostly for the better in some respects (electronics/pick-ups in stereo etc.) but much worse in stock. (sustain, warmth, longevity)

You can bridge a lot of ills with alternate string sets/tuning, etc. But when I found a LP that couldn't hold/set a harmonic tuning, I knew it was crap. I've got a V that without a Floyd Rose upgrade would have become kindling...not cheap kindling either...

I don't get your V comment? Are you saing you disliked it enough to get freaky with some mods as opposed to trashing it? Thats kind of why I like the EPI lps. Given the number of subcontacting factories, its a crap shoot, but if you can get the action right with a nut replacement, it opens up some options for electronics.

I think if you are talking new LP, you really have to go to the Heritage guys who still operate out of the old Kalamazoo factory. I've only ever played their hollow bodies, but those guys know what they are doing.

Gibson made a line called "Firebrand" or "The Paul" in 1979-80. The are not finished the same way as Les Paul's but they have the same shape.

The materials are good quality. Mahogany body, ebony fretboard, nice tuning machines. Since they aren't as flashy, though, you can still get them for a relatively good price.

you don't need to 'splain yourself oldguy. (I typoed 'oldgut' then fixed it incidentally).

anyway, us guys know it's intrinsically fun to fell a tree. like throwing a rock at a street sign, a snowball at an icicle, or even shooting a clay pigeon or small animal (yes oneder, it's true I think shooting a gun can be fun), there's something that fuels our fire about conquering nature, or at least making a dynamic motive come true. we're all wired for it..

Hot yoga and harrassing Oneder are two of my pass times although only one of them is constructive at all. But just once, I'd like to blow something up. Something really big like a dam. I don't really have much interest in cutting down trees unless they are dying nuisance trees in my front yard. And the fun part about that isn't cutting them down, it's putting a chain to them and yanking them out with the Jeep. Now that's fun.

GI, funny thing, been typo'ing oldgut myself once in a while... won't let me log in that way though.
Few years back I dyed my hair black, wore PJs and a smoking jacket, used a Meerschaum pipe as a prop and went to a Halloween party as Hugh Hefner, MsOG went as a bimbo on my arm, the next year we reversed the roles, so in fact I did...
"put on women's clothing and hang around in bars"
MsOG was a much better Hef than I, we won a bottle of very good Chardonnay that year...
