Heard a rumor today that the land under the Viking was sold to condo developers. Absolutely no proof other than hearsay. Anyone else hear anything?

There was another thread recently that discussed the same rumor:

Man, two threads. Rumors are like wildfire.

I'm going to go and get a couple pitchers. The regulars can share it. I don't know what else to do for them.

Maybe nimrod will make an appearance...

Can you find out if the rumors are true while you're there, Oneder? Always thought the Viking was the one place safe from the wrecking ball.

  6. What a travesty that would be! I did a bit of research and it looks like the Auto Body building on the corner of 65th and 24th was purchased by the company, Ballard Lofts in November 2007. Fortunately, according to the King County Property records, The Viking looks to be safe, as it has been owned by the same couple since 1995.

Or maybe the owners sold the land for big bucks (more dough in real estate than a bar of that size) and King County hasn't updated the records yet. Rumors rumors rumors.

Send oneder in on his humanitarian mission, stat!

Not a rumor as I have had this confirmed by multiple sources(as stated in a previous thread). Sorry. Not sure what they plan on doing with the property yet. Lots of speculation there.....

Well, rumors never come from multiple sources, so I guess it's not a rumor.

I heard that it's going to be a Target, but they are still buying property.

A Target? Can't imagine it would be zoned for that big a commercial structure. Anyone know what the zoning is there?

If its true that Ballard is becoming the next Belltown, what would everyone consider to be the next Ballard, or the closest substitute? Greenwood or Georgetown maybe?

Cate, I think Marigold is pulling your leg.

If Target moves in, might as well un-incorporate from Seattle and become part of Snohomish County.

Strip malls and corporations equal sad panda....

The Auto guy on the corner actually owns all the land there and has sold it to be developed in September. The auto shop, barbers, and the Viking will all be going. :-(

maybe they could build the new condo 'above & around' the Viking ala Edith Macefield's house.

The Auto guy and the Viking guy are siblings, no? Same last name anyway.

Maybe a coincidence. At any rate, a shame to see it go...

Well that would mean the Viking is safe since the fine Target will have to buy several more properties to make it worthwhile. When is the last time you saw a Target parking lot? Even underground it would need to go 4 lots East similar to the QFC. I'm not saying it can't or won't happen. I'm just saying that I have thrown in the towel. Let them come. Ballard is not the funny little corner of Seattle with the alt country scene any more and it certainly isn't a quaint little fishing village with a drinking problem. Nope it is a destination sought after neighborhood and I hope all the rest of you make an acceptable profit when you chose to move on also.

  23. Could be "target" as in "target for developers"?? or an expansion of The Target Group (developers)

Already a Target near Northgate Mall. A very strange parking lot. Would be odd for them to open one so close. Target is only marginally better than MalWart as far as corporate misdeeds.

I can't believe you guys fell for that 'Target' rumour. good work marigold.

sadly, it would make Ballard even more popular if it were true. face it, most of you were excited just wanting to believe it. it's not like some cheesy 'Olive Garden' or 'Chilis'--Target (tar-szay) is a true destination for the sensible hipster.

Alferd, what possessed them to put in those crazy ramps so you can park on the roof over at Northgate?
that parking lot is nuts, but I like it in a 'Centre Pompidou' sort of way.

I get my hair cut at the barber shop. Indeed, Scott (the barber) is looking for a new location, since the property is (will be?) sold. No immediate plans were available, other than I thought I heard that it would be condos over retail shops.

Great, old school barber shop, btw.

  27. As far as the Target rumor, I think it is a dead issue. Target IS opening a new store, but not in Ballard. There's an ad on CL which reads, in part,

Target is very excited to be opening a down town Seattle City Target and we are looking for talented Managers to help us!

I'm pretty sure a "City Target" is a compact Target, maybe only 20% the square footage of their normal stores, and perhaps without certain departments.

Maybe they can turn Key Arena into a Target and get some money back.

Actually, I heard that they are going to fill Key Arena with water and turn in into a wave pool. Can anyone substantiate that? Oly?

The new downtown Seattle Target will be on Second and Pike about a block from Pike Place Market (http://www.downtownseattlenews.com/2011/target-department-store-coming-to-2nd-pike/). They've been working on it for months.

@smartsyartsy - No, it's a different location. There's a big black banner across it that says "Skanska" - it's hard to miss.

There is a permit filed with the city to build a Wal-Mart there, and it includes camper parking for the Ballard homeless

SA - two blocks south of old Rack store on the same side of the street and a block east of Market clock. If you've been around town a really long time, you might remember it as a JC Penney's.
