Warm weather is here and thus our hipster neighbors in the rental below us once again have their campfire going. That means we can’t have a window open because the smoke comes right across the alley into our house. Worse yet they burn scrap, full of chemicals and preservatives, and the smoke is acrid and toxic. I bet they are greenies. : )

This is some of the best news I've heard in a long time. I am so happy right now. Thanks for sharing BR!

Send them some marshmallows -- the two sets of chemicals will cancel each other out!

Seattle Fire Department will respond to a call of illegal burning and issue citations if they are made aware of the situation (and they are not out on an emergency). Report it.

I've got an old Asbestos wrapped furnace that I was a planning on taking up to index and dumping and shooting with a rifle, but I'd rather burn it if I can get that address please..

Check this site BR - it is not city law they are running afoul of but state in most likelihood. http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/air/outdoor_woodsmoke/residentialburn.htm

I feel your pain, BR. We actually moved in part because of our backyard neighbors and their endless fires and parties. It was mostly the noise, but the continual wood smoke aggravated my asthma (not to mention the cigarette smoke).

Ironically we also had a backyard firepit, but we didn't use it EVERY Friday, Saturday and Sunday and a few Thursdays, too. And we didn't burn garbage, treated wood, etc.

The prior citation has to do with burn piles, burn barrels and burning various and sundry waste.

Here is the PS Clear Air Agency page on outdoor burning
    http://www1.pscleanair.org/actions/outdoorfires/recreational.aspx
    It cites
    WAC 173-425-050

Having a small outdoor wood fire is permitted with a number of provisos. The most important as it pertains to the post are that the neighbors can't burn treated wood, plywood, construction scraps etc. and they should stop if they are causing a nuisance from a legal fire.

The real issue, as mentioned, is courtesy vs. legality but past experience has taught me that most neighbors are sensitive about criticism (even a suggestion of criticism). However to establish a nuisance you are going to have to report them I think. May be worth talking to them about it first. Step two might be talking to the landlord. The lease may have provisions regarding burning and community rules about bothering neighbors.

Halogen lights and a mighty big sprinkler, both aimed accordingly. Or you could talk to them about it, they may not realize their impact.
