Recommend a haircutter

My usual haircutter broke a finger, so I need a one-time replacement. Anybody have a recommendation? I have fairly short hair and don't want anything fancy.

Phinney is good, but Ballard is fine, too.

I've heard very good and very bad things about Rudy's, but if they don't take appointments then they're out for me.

    Thanks.

Depends what you are looking for. Vain is a bit for the hip (though I am distinctly tragically NOT hip), but Valentine does a fantastic job with perpetually straight hair. Besides a good haircut, he can solve the problem of getting it to do something besides the Same Old Thing. Vain takes appointments and credit cards.

I just went to the Sunset Hill barber shop again. The last time was about 1960; same chair, different magazines.
The wife approved of the cut but I'd avoid Saturdays. Lots of kids waiting for their turn. At least they had cartoons playing.

  10. Sunset Hill Barber Shop +1 if you don't mind an ex Navy guy who makes an inappropriate joke or two once in awhile. He likes to keep it lively but reigns it in when there are kids there and has cartoons/toys to distract them. It's a no frills shop, but the guy has been barbering for going on something like 40 years now, so he definitely knows what he's doing.

I've got a very good barber, he's been retired for a few years, it's the best ;-)

Pasta, Gene, the barber there, has dog treats and kiddie treats (and is willing to let you decide which gets which!); definitely an authentic neighborhood barber shop.

  13. Been going there for over two decades now Mondo. I'm smart enough to always be wary when Gene starts telling some story. There's almost always guaranteed to be some sort of punchline that will get you at the end. I gotta give it to the guy, he can definitely keep a straight face.

Ernie, Mars Hair couldn't be further from Mars Hill in every way possible (except maybe their initials). Oh wait...I see what you did there. :)

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Some I eliminated because they were too far away, or too expensive, or there was too much contrast between the good and bad reviews of the place (Rudy's). I also didn't like that Sugarcomb charges a different amount for women's and men's cuts. If they want to make a distinction it should be between short and long hair.

    So the winner is . . .

Lisa, at Stardust Salon, 7220 Linden Ave.

She did exactly what I asked for, and the price was very reasonable: $28. for short hair. I recommend her.

But here's another question. I didn't tip her, and now I'm wondering if I should have. I thought that when people own their salons they get to set the price at whatever they want, so there's no tipping. If they are just renting the chair and therefore have to pay part of their take to the owner, then there's a reason to tip.

Do you usually tip your injured stylist? I always tip for my haircut FWIW. To each his/her own. If you are regretting it you can always go back.

No, I don't tip her. She's self-employed, and tells me what she wants to earn. And she doesn't expect a tip.

People often tip massage therapists, no? When I tried to tip a therapist once he adamantly refused it. He said he considered massage as part of the health sector, and said that no one would ever tip their doctor so they shouldn't tip him either. He's the only one I've ever heard say this, and I thought it was an interesting point of view.

My parents own a restaurant back in Buffalo and when my mothers worked the majority of the customers tipped but there where some people that firmly believed you don't tip the owner..

I have always tipped an owner and employees at establishments but I worked in the business.

I don't think there is ever an excuse not to tip in a resturant, assuming good service. If the owner(s) are working they usually just pass the tips on to the rest of the staff. The people BH described are probably just looking for an excuse to be a tight-ass. People like that probably pay attention to the schedule and only visit when they can justify the 15-20% "discount".
