Seems like all the grocery stores just sell pretty large bottles, mostly fifths and larger. I'm looking for like a pint of Jameson - that sort of thing. What's an Irishman to do?

Drinking half is a good idea - so good, actually, that I'm likely to use it twice. Hence the desire to keep just a pint around...:)

BLA - the "old" liquor store on Market had some 375 ml bottles of Jameson last week. Price was the same as the 750 ml bottles in QFC. The new owner of that store told me that he can get just about anything you want even those really little bottles that the grocery stores will not be selling.

I know you can buy it in the grocery stores, but I'm saying they only sell big bottles and I don't want that much booze.

Sound like the Vegan has my solution though! I just went there actually but was a few minutes after closing. Oh well.

So your willing to spend the same amount for half as much? You are either an alcoholic or bad at math. If you're an alcoholic then you'll just go back for a pint later so buy the fifth and save. If your bad at math then buy the fifth and keep the other half to drink so you can forget that you're bad at math.

It's on sale at QFC or Safeway (can't recall which one) this week.

Some treatment programs teach a model called "Harm Reduction" instead of or in addition to abstinence. Purchasing a pint instead of a quart could be part of a harm reduction treatment program. (Or then again he may just want only a pint for reasons of his own).

Safeway has club card sale prices on a lot of their current selection. And it doesn't look like you'll have trouble finding a taker for a trade off of what you don't want. I'd like to toss my hat in the ring, btw. :-)

In lieu of pint-sized bottles, you could buy a 1.75 liter bottle and get yourself a flask. It has the benefit of being green. Irish like being green.

Does Reno still sell cheaper booze? My brother, few years back, asked to borrow my brand new piece of luggage. Turned out it was to bring back booze - only problem - the turnstile for the luggage pickup had failed & the luggage was stacked up - with mine on bottom. He gets it, walking out feeling all smug he got all this cheap booze until he felt something on his leg - and it was wet - looked & trail of booze from luggage pickup. It was a bottle of Crown Royal that broke & that piece of luggage forever had a imprint of the velvet bottle bag. I got rid of the booze smell by leaving out in sunshine for a couple of days.

I'd suggest you buy 1.75 liters, and give the bottle to someone trustworthy to hold it for you.

I'd be willing to part with a pint at a time for you, for slightly less than the current pint cost at the old Market Street liquor store.

    You are welcome. ;-)

I'm Irish, so I feel your pain, and am always looking for an easy way to fund my guilty habit. It could be a good match...

    2. 1der1, that is the funniest thing I have ever seen you type.
    3. Borat, I think you mean "Poitin"

Poitín was a source of income for some, while for others it was produced for cheap alcoholic drinking. Poitín was popular at weddings and wakes and a large supply was at hand. Farmers use as a cure for sick calves and other farm animals as well as a method of curing muscle cramp/problems, etc...

Indeed. It is possible to legally do it now. From my extensive research (watching "Moonshiners"), it looks pretty easy if you follow the playbook and don’t use solder containing lead in you r gear (or get real drunk and fall off a ladder). You definitely don’t want to skip the step where you bleed off the blinding/crippling methanol before bottling up the ethanol, or burn your garage down, but yeah I too am tempted. A friend of a friend just got "Big Gin" off the ground here locally, good stuff too, Copper Gate carries it.

Whichever flavor of religion you prefer, if any, Bushmills is not better. Jameson never made me zombie sleepwalk pee on my 6’4” college roommate while he was sleeping, unfortunately I can’t say that about Bushmills, and I have the broken ribs and scars to prove that can happen. The triple distilling of the Jameson helps remove the bath salts.

Ralph's the huge California grocery store chain. Just a little thread drift.

I didn't account for sales tax Oly.

But to get back to the original subject of booze in WA, is there a black market for liquor in WA? One could probably make 10 bucks profit per on self-imported bottles. Probably not worth the risk And trouble. If you owned a restaurant or bar though you could save thousands ...

Is Bushmills less sweet than Jameson? That's actually what keeps me coming back to the Distillery Reserve - it's less sweet. I just can't handle more than a couple shots of 5 yr Jameson because of the sweetness.

Bushmills is made by the Protestants & Jameson is made by the Catholics. I always find it funny the amount of people that are Catholic Irish for the day on St Patrick's Day ordering Bushmills ;)

phoo - Red Breast Whiskey is excellent

    http://www.thedrinkshop.com/products/nlpdetail.php?prodid=3604

Redbreast is a very special whiskey within the Irish Distillers fortified as it's the only 12 year old Pure Pot Still available.

It was first launched in 1939 as the brand name given to the pot still whiskey supplied by Jameson to whiskey bonders before bottling at the distillery became the norm in 1968. Stocks of whiskey in bonders' stores petered out, and thus Redbreast all but disappeared until its re-launch by the distillery in the 1990s as a single pot still whiskey.

This pure pot still whiskey is matured for a minimum of 12 years in sherry casks and Bourbon barrels. Like all good pot still whiskeys, it is strongly flavoured and assertive, making it a rare treat for the connoisseur of fine old whiskey.

In my experience, if you want to keep Saint Patrick's day authentic you put Garth Brooks on the juke box, have Budweiser for the men, cider on ice for the ladies, and red bull and vodka for those who want something stronger. Sounds like hell but let me tell you its good Craic!

Phoo when drunk side by side Jameson has more of a vanilla taste when it first hits your tongue (which comes across as sweet) and is harsher and less descript on the finish. Bushmills by comparison is more subtle and scotch-y at first then smoother and longer on the finish. If Jameson seems to sweet to you you'd probably prefer Bushmill. Not that Jameson is bad and probably better with most mixers besides water or soda.

Edog both spice and vanilla are imparted by barrels, while to me Bush seems peatier, which some describe as a sweet flavor. We might be tasting the same things but just describing differently.

Smoother finishes taste sweeter too - if your tongue's not on fire you taste the ethanol, and ethanol is perceived as sweetness.

Now that I think about it, it has been years since I've had either. If I did a side by side today, I'm not sure what I would say. As for peat, your pallet it correct Jameson malts their grain over clay tiles, while Bushmills malts it over peat.
