A friend is moving to Colombia (South America) and wants to ship about 600 pounds of household belongings. Does anyone have any ideas on finding a shipping company? Many seem to have a fee that starts at 1000 pounds. And how to tell if they're reputable, besides just waiting to see if your belongings show up?

There are freight facilitators that are available for international shipping. Some facilitators are country-specific.

    Maybe this will help:

SHM - that was my first thought, but I think that freight moves in the opposite direction. Maybe one could utilize the empty space for the return trip. I heard somewhere that they were using submarines!

Nutmeg - humble apologies! I know nothin'

Yes, I knew my post might sound fishy. It's someone who went to school here for 5 years and is returning home. Thanks for the links.

Your friend is local, so she knows how corrupt Latin American customs offices can be. Argentine customs steals with impunity, as do some local carriers. I'd go with an American shipper with local offices and be sure the insurance policy is in place and customs bereaucracy is well managed.

Yes, they know about the corruption, which is why they're so worried. I had a friend ship his stuff to Ecuador and very little of it ever arrived. So how do you tell if the customs bureaucracy is well managed?

You need Bio's help but she doesn't post here very often.

A big, officious company like DHL or FedEx might be a safe bet if they ship large containers. They don't let customs steal from them, or if so they pay insurance claims. But I've only made much small shipments too and from South America, so not really sure ...

Penny, do you mean Biophile? If so, I'll ask her as she's a friend of mine.

Ballardemician, what countries have you shipped to? Did the stuff get there? My friends have some big boxes and bikes and a microwave, but in terms of container shipping that would take up a tiny corner. So far the quotes have been for a much bigger quantity of stuff.

Argentina and Chile. No problems in Chile but in Argentina had some model helicopter parts stolen and some stuff so held up by trumped up customs beauracrary that I had to give up on ever getting it.

Try Rainier Overseas Movers, Inc. They specialize in moving household goods internationally.

I wish I was moving to Colombia for a while. I may have to settle for a holiday there instead.
