Why isn't Mars Hill Church being picketed?

I was working out at LA Fitness on Sunday and saw from the window all these people filing into the Mars Hill Church. It occurred to me that these innocent looking people were totally unaware of the horror stories I have been reading about their church. People being shunned, the pastor blaming "demons" for women's problems, and the one that really pisses me off, telling parishioners that demons are behind the popularity of yoga. Demons, for godsakes in this day and age.

Oh come on, people. How come all these victims of Mars Hill aren't out front confronting the church and telling about all the abuses going on in this church? Why do we allow these charlatans to victimize people right here in liberated Ballard?!!

They are welcome to choose their own path. Best we can do is provide support, comfort, friendship for those who decide to leave the church. Stand up for people who ask for your help and deserve it. Not for people who don't ask and don't want it. Outrage doesn't make you righteous or awesome. But I bet there are plenty of people who choose to leave that church who come out isolated, jobless, separated from spouse, etc who could sure use substantial help rather than someone standing on a street corner screaming. Practical help is the best kind.

not all of us feel abused. except my wife who has demonic woman problems. we don't worship the cut of our abs and lie about running and working out as we still are flabby.

Dude, demons ARE behind the popularity of yoga! Especially paddleboard yoga!

I heard that a demon inspired Mark Driscoll to invent paddleboard yoga.

    SHD -
You said it - whenever I drive or walk past MHC I cannot believe that people, especially young people, are willing to subscribe to their dogma. I don't think these people are totally unaware of the MHC stories. They have blinders on.

Keep these threads going - it helps keep ME sane at least - to see that other people are as mystified as I am. I would love to picket MHC - the difficulty would be choosing which of their many egregious activities to target.

Actually Cthulhu has dibs on any yoga focused around water. I'd personally like to thank the demons for bringing us rock and roll.

Why would you want to picket them? If people want to be idiots and subjegate themselves to that idiot of a pastor, let them. We can all have a good laugh over a beer about it.

I dunno, I think Westboro has given picketing a bad name. I can't get behind the practice anymore, I don't see it's constructive use. I would just go over and talk to them in a nice tone and see what they'll hear.

side note: Paddleboard yoga?! Seriously?! That's gotta take some skills.

No more silly than belief in any of the magical deities hawked by most religions.

    FSM excluded, of course.

There's a right to freedom of religion in these here parts & there's a right of freedom to pack guns to back it up, so shut up unless you're willing to trade in your right to exercise free speech also. No, seriously, shut up you damned free speaker!

Ha! Last time we went to Trader Joe's Mrs Ernie and I purposely walked through the MH parking lot on the way home. We did it hoping that someone we know would see us and start the rumor that we had gotten stupid and joined the church!

I saw you, Ernie and Mrs Ernie. Right next to Mars. I think you got some of the Stupid on you. I don't know how to help you but I'll try. Throw down the Trader Joe plastic bag, look innocent and head for your vehicle. I have you covered.

I would just like to remind the Mars Hillers that their written confessions of sexual escapades, drug use, lusting and deception are really only between them and God. No one has the right to make you write down your personal failings for the purpose of controling you or for the constant threat to shame you if you do not comply with the Church's arbitrary rules "which the Church would, no doubt, say are God's rules". What arrogance!

I just find it amazing that such a bizarre, right wing church has taken over a good piece of Ballard real estate. It's my understanding that you must be a card carrying Republican woman hater, poor people hater, Jesus hater to be allowed entry into this so called "church". Crazy how easily people are sucked into such a hateful institution! Next Driscoll will have them sucking down the tainted Kool Aid and LIKING it...

So why do they continue to get publicity? Let them be, drawing attention to them only ensures they don't have to pay for advertising.

magia76, many would say the same about Baptist, Catholic, Muslim and Judaism

Luckily in the US they are protected by the 1st amendment of the constitution:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof ; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Why would I take time out of my busy life to picket a church that's telling it's members exactly what they want to hear? I just don't understand why folks feel they need to "rescue" others from their religious beliefs. Last I checked, church membership was a voluntary activity.
