So the old college pleather couch has just about given all it could and I'm in the market for something new and slightly more "grown up" (even though I'm not!).

Budget is maxed at $1,000 but hoping to not go that high. I know this is not much, but I'm not looking for high-end brand names or designer...just seems like everything on craigslist is crap.

I'm not from here, so I need advice or recommendations on where to go look.

    Thanks!
    B.

Check out consignment stores. Craigslist tends to be lower-end stuff, as you noticed -- the stuff with actual value is sold elsewhere. I know there's a consignment store on 24th just 1/2 a block up from Market St.

If you have a hankering for Scandinavian design that's a bit up from Ikea, check out the Dania chain, especially at sale time. I've been to their Lynnwood store, but I think they've got one over on Roosevelt near Whole Foods.

Garage sales are another possibility, but you'll probably have to visit a bunch to find something you like.

I know of a couple used red leather Ikea loveseat/sofas that may be available, if one of those interests you. I bought a used leather Ikea couch myself, and it's very comfortable.

I second the recommendation to try Dania. I have had my rounds of furniture from Ikea and it's good for the price. I will say though, that my Dania stuff is holding out much better and was worth the extra cost. Good luck and have fun!

  5. I would checkout classic consignment on 56 st & 24 Av. They bring in good stuff in good shape for a fair price.

The Mosaic store up by Dicks. Don't know if they are still open but the Homesite Furniture place on 14th was having a store closing sale.

Thanks- looks like I need to do some serious scouting or hold out a bit and up the budget... anyone ever been to the consignment stores on the east side? I heard they might have good finds, just curious if anyone has firsthand knowledge.

Have to disagree with the "Craigslist is crap" comments. We found our couch on Craigslist, and I regularly see nice ones posted there -- when we bought ours we viewed two others that were lovely but not quite right for our space. Our leather couch only cost $250. We rented a U-haul to pick it up and that added another $75. On the plus side, I also advertised our old couch on Craigslist and sold it for $75 -- it was cute, but getting kinda worn out. Still, two college girls setting up their first apartment were glad to get it.

Anyone ever try the Kasala outlet store in SODO? That could be a good place to score a really deluxe sofa for less. I've never been inside. Also, our previous couch came from the Bon clearance store in Southcenter (now Macy's clearance). We also got a good deal on a rug there, though both those experiences are pretty long ago at this point.

The Kasala outlet is good - two friends have used it, one just three weeks ago. There are two furniture consignment stores on 15th. One on east side of street, south of Brown Bear car wash. The other is on west side of street near Chef Shop (street might be Elliot Ave by then). Across Denny Ave from the WholeFoods at Westlake is another good one - Modele's. They share the space with Glenn Richards, and it is not well signed. Good stuff in there.

Having had a VERY bad experience with used furniture, I buy new now when I can or go without. I LOVE the couch I got from Bassett Furniture up in Lynnwood. Got to pick out every portion of the couch - arms, cushions, fabrics, pillows, height, additions, etc. And they're great on warranty and repairs/cleaning etc. One couch cushion wore out long before it should have and they replaced the entire thing for free, not just the fabric that wore out - new cushion inside of it too, just in case it was the culprit. Just great service, and delivery, and 10 years later the couch is still going strong with hardly any sign of wear and tear (and it gets a LOT of heavy use).

lak is talking about 15th in Interbay, down by the Whole Foods/Staples area, not the Brown Bear up here.
