So we went on the great wheel yesterday and after reviewing my receipt they charged 9.5% retail tax and in addition there was an additional charge of 5% admission tax. I never recall seeing this in the past and why are they taxing 2x's now.

It's always been there. It's hasn't always been noted specifically on tickets. Usually it's paid by the venue out of the ticket price.

sort of like the old liquor store ways.

Exactly. Or the "we'll pay your sales tax" come-ons.

An interesting concept, an admissions tax, especially on top of a retail sales tax. I suppose somewhere out there there is a "decided not to go in tax" as well? And of course, the infamous "undecided tax." Which I suppose you can deduct once you actually decide and have paid the "admissions tax" or the "decided not to go in tax." May as well cover all the bases.

In the discussions about the proposed new stadium, one of the arguments made by the proponents is that the admissions tax (and perhaps the sales tax on admissions as well) goes almost wholly to the City, rather than being split with the state. This is touted as bringing the City more tax revenue per dollar spent than if other types of businesses were located there.

So what did you think of the ride, BH?

    Buffalohawk,

Not to redirect the conversation, but how did you and your daughter enjoy the big wheel?

For some reason when I hear that name I envision two chocolate chip cookies with ice cream sandwiched in between them as sold in 7-Eleven.

In the sheer interest of trivia, did you know that the 7-eleven big wheel actually started out as the Harbor Bar. It was a wonderful cookie/ice cream sandwich envisioned by the daughter of the family famous in New England for starting Friendly's. (if you grew up in New England you will remember Friendly's....it was ultimately bought by Hershey's and is still a good place to eat and has realllllly good peppermint stick ice cream)

The daughter and the family made them in their garage beginning in the mid to late 70's and sold them out of a pharmacy in Northeast Harbor before expanding the operation so they could supply convenience stores and their own "flagship" sales facility near the entrance to the bridge crossing from the mainland to Mount Desert Island where Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park are. When I worked at Acadia it was a real treat to stop on highway 3 on your way home after a trip on the mainland and get a lobster roll from one of the ubiquitous lobster pounds, and then top it off with a Harbor Bar from their shop. Pretty darn good.

I haven't been back there in an age and a half, but I understand Harbor Bars are still available from tons of stores, though they no longer have a sales shop that is open to the public. And of course, the gazillion or so lobster pounds are there as well. If you are heading to visit Acadia National Park (one of the gems in the National Park System in my mind) you could do far worse than to gnosh on a lobster roll and a Harbor Bar on the way to the island.

OK...enough meaningless typing. It is too nice to be indoors. The bike is calling, along with garage projects. (sigh)

We had a great time on the wheel and even though the line took about an hour it felt like it moved quickly. I decided to go yesterday since the weather was perfect and we know how quickly in can change. I would also like to go again at night with her to check out the city lit up. It lasted about 20 minutes so realistically I felt the price to be decent and the experience invaluable. We had a great time downtown and when the skies turn blue again it is the most beautiful city in the lower 48 :)

BH, maybe cheaper to go to the Space Needle at night for city lights?

    Bigger view anyways.

ds, gotta agree that Bah Hahbah and Acadia are beautiful! I was out there once visiting the mutant mice at Jackson Lab, and was relieved to find neither mutant blueberries on the vines nor mutant lobsters in the shacks. Too bad I missed the Harbor Bars, but I might have caused a ruckus had I seen them, as even back then I knew It's-Its were the best!

Mondoman! Are Its Its still available in CA? It was many years after working at Acadia before I went west and have managed to spend relatively little time in CA. Never got to experience those.

No ruckus would have been caused! Its Its are supposed to be the idea the Harbor Bar was based on. The folks who make Harbor Bars even admit that on their web site. Not sure how we would arrange it, but a side by side taste comparison might be in order. All deference to the forerunning of the Harbor Bar though!

I'll make a list of ice cream sandwiches and their native cities while you call up the Food Channel and get them to fund our travel expenses!
I recently saw It's-Its for sale in the freezer at Safeway or Fred Meyer, I think. Whenever I visit the rels down in the SF Bay Area, I notice the It's-It headquarters building while heading back, as it's on the frontage road next to the Bayshore Freeway just a mile south of SFO airport.

    Stopgo,

I think CA was gonna annex at least southern OR if I remember right. Or southern OR was gonna annex northern CA after they seceded from CA.

Then they will all realign and we will end up with one state west of the Cascades down to Northern CA, and another state east of the Cascades.

    Mondoman,

Will look for an Its Its in Safeway/Freddies next time I am there. I am curious now. Actually, any excuse for ice cream!!!!

I think they've reduced the diameter of the It's-It since I was a kid, or my mouth has gotten bigger, or I've got one of those "Objects in memory appear larger and better than they were in real life" brains. Still yummy, though.

Friendly's!!! I haven't thought of them in years --- can you get jimmmies on your cones out here? or a frappe? Love the peppermint stick ice cream there!

At the Friendly's in NH they left about half an inch of paper wrapping on your straw, that how we always knew we had crossed the boarder on our way to Canobie Lake Park.

Jimmies and shots are still at Friendly's! As are the Frappe's. Thick enough that if you suck too hard you will either collapse your heavy duty straw or find you have inverted yourself from the toes upwards. And yep....the Peppermint stick ice cream is still great!!! Last time I was there you could still get a square hamburger on toast too. I always liked their burgers as a kid.

A few places in Seattle leave the top wrapping on a straw. A sign of civilization in my mind. Couthyness unparalleled. I havent found a Frappe here though. And chocolate sprinkles are just not the same as jimmies, even though they are identical. It is the name that changes their character!!!

Ahhhhh. The food of youth!!! Sigh!!

Have to admit, nothing's ever topped the cat stealing story and all of the post-thieving thread yankery. I bet she still thinks I ratted on her--which I totally didn't.
