5 of 9 Yankees that played yesterday were former Mariners.
But, it's not just the Yankees. Too many of the marque players in the league wore a Mariner jersey at some point.
I'd like to spend even more money to create yet another farm team, or two. Anyone looking to bless us with such an opportunity lately? lol

Both the Rainiers and Aquasox are fun teams to go see and ticket prices are SO cheap. The Aquasox have Zunino now, is a chance to see him close up and for under $20 :)

The Mariners can Facebook off !!!!
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/48684007/ns/local_news-seattle_wa/#.UC1EbKCz8f0
The Seattle Mariners confirmed Wednesday that the organization has helped fund opposition to a new SODO sports arena, including partially paying for a recent poll of city residents.
“We haven’t changed our position,” said Rebecca Hale, spokesperson for the Mariners.
Hale said the organization partially financed a poll taken last week that found a majority of registered voters opposed public bonding on the proposed $490 million project that would put a basketball and hockey arena just south of Safeco Field.
“Our concern is the location,” said Hale, “which is the concern of the other groups, which is why we’ve been part of that coalition.”
She could not answer why the Mariners, which received public financing to build Safeco, funded a poll asking about public financing.
Hale said the MLB franchise is not concerned about competition from competing sports franchises.

Speaking of the Port of Seattle, do we really want to save it:
http://cleanandsafeports.org/seattletacoma/
Let Tacoma have the business...
Chris Hansen already owns more than enough property to build the stadium. Let him. Cuz if we don't, he's going to redevelop the land anyway. Thank it can't be re-zoned? Ask South Lake Union about that. We were offered a park and we got office buildings when we said no. What will we get when we say no to this deal? A clean waterfront with a promenade and shops and restaurants? Hmmmm, okay!

Marigold,
While I would like to see the Port Employees, drivers especially, paid better, and I am always in favor of continuing to clean up sources of pollutants in the Sound and surrounding areas, I would hate to see the Port go away for a whole slug of reasons. Not least of which is the dollars it brings into the city. Also the entire ambience a port brings. They are fascinating places. People should be more aware of it and what goes on there than they are, both from the point of view of our health and the health of our ecosystems and the health of our economy, but also because of the fascination with ships and shipping and fishing and other sea based commerce and research. I was crushed to have NOAA take their research vessels out for example. What a resource they were here! to me, Seattle would be a very different, and markedly poorer place without it. And I mean poorer in far more than the economic sense.

marigold, That group is talking about contractors for hauling for the POS, and the issue is only that, the port has little or no control of the owners.
The Port of Seattle is one of the largest employers in the State and hosts over 113,000 jobs with another 62,000 jobs in support of the port and an annual impact to the community of $18 Billion
And generate over $820 million in direct paid taxes to the State and City and pays over $ 4 Billion in salaries each year
Do you really want them to fold up and go away?
Posted 10 months ago # -
RichY, where are you getting your numbers? I'm really curious.
I don't really want them to fold up and go away, but I think they will, with or without a stadium.
Posted 10 months ago # -
Sounds about right...
I'd rather have a park...and another s.l.u.t.
Think about the benefit of billionaire playgrounds bookending a slum.../sarcasm
Posted 10 months ago # -
Those numbers are pretty squishy. I don't buy it.
Posted 10 months ago # -
After pondering this arena for a few months I think if its going to be built then the guys with all the money should foot the bill and reap all the benefits. They have more than enough dough to pay 2x the current price. Seattlites are like a school of dumb wide-eyed sardines, scared of the faintest shadow in the water. They should build it in Issaquah. It would be fun to hear the network stooges pronounce that word Issaquah every game.

Good for you, regrettably, we don't like capitalists here, we insist on providing bail-outs, hand-outs, and tax incentives. That sure teaches them to try and facebook around with us!

although I can see Dave's point that the Port brings a certain 'sense of place' to Seattle, I don't like the direction they're headed.
years ago, I thought about those lovely cranes when I thought of the Port. now I think of those dreadful cruiseships fouling up the Sound.
also, NOAA was somewhat cooler than the Port.
sort of like I'd rather have NASA here than Boeing (from an interest, not economic standpoint).might as well build the arena down there. we can pay homage by naming the team the 'Cranes', maybe with some origami hockey stick logo.
Posted 10 months ago # -
marigold, squishy or not the Port of Seattle is one of the busiest ports in the world - the Japanese 5, Korea and Russia use Seattle almost exclusively for all import and export, not to mention all of the air passengers and air cargo in and out of here.
Seatac Airport is the 4th or 5th largest "city" in Washington with close to 31 Million people a year taking off and landing.
Posted 10 months ago # -
GI, you just want the arena no matter what it costs the City of Seattle taxpayers.
Posted 10 months ago # -
This is partly nostalgia, but I miss "the good old days" (can't believe I said that. sigh) when newspapers in port cities had a section devoted to the activity at their port: what ships were coming and going, where were they from and where were they registered, what were they supposedly carrying, what things were happening at the port, etc. It gave you a feel for the level of activity there and how it related to your community. Most cities and towns with ports had that, and it was always interesting to read. Or at least it was for a kid like me who loved water and ships.
Over the years those sections have disappeared and I think our sense of the importance of a port and what it means to the city it is in is much diminished because of it.
The numbers cited by RichY don't surprise me in the least. The amount of stuff going through there is amazing. And the numbers of people the port supports locally through jobs and trade and repairs and sales and supplies and on and on would be staggering. It is big. And it is busy. It is a much bigger part of the fabric of our city than I think many of us realize.
As I said....I am all in favor of keeping after the POS to keep making things cleaner, and I am in favor of making sure workers are compensated fairly for their efforts, and provided with as safe a work place as can be done. I would hate to see the Port go away. I don't see that happening simply because of the importance of the Sound and its superb deep water harbor, and to the ports infrastructure and access to airlines and roads and rails. It is all part of a large web of transport.
Sorry....don't mean to be preachy. But I really do feel it is an important asset for Seattle and for the whole left coast in general.

GI,
Things like cruise ships can be dealt with through the right regulations. It takes pressure from us to have those regs put in place and enforced of course. The same applies to the other commercial and private vessels around the Sound. Keep pushing for it. A clean Sound benefits all of us.
Are you by any chance a kayaker? Ever check out the Puget Sound Keepers? They have issues like any group, but also play an important role monitoring things in the sound.
I need to get out of here. Am in the office way too late. Toodles folks!!
D
Posted 10 months ago # -
I agree with everything in Dave's posts, and it's not ONLY because I make my living in the marine industry. :-)
Posted 10 months ago # -
perhaps regulations can curb the cruise industry, but it's been rather explosive and seems to be growing quickly:
"The number of cruise ships docking in Seattle each year has increased from 6 vessels carrying 6,615 passengers in 1999 to 218 vessels with 875,433 passengers in 2009. The Port of Seattle estimates the city will see five more ships this year, carrying a total of 858,00 passengers. The ships will dock at either Pier 66 or Pier 91, which opened to cruise ships last year."
I personally don't like cruise ships (if you didn't notice) and would grumble about them regardless of water degradation. how many times have I driven through a ridiculous traffic jam around pier 91 because the 'Disney Wonder' was docked and they needed a lane for cab pick-ups/drop-offs. how many times has my plane landed at Seatac and I was told to "wait so these other people can get off to catch their cruise."
plenty.the Port is plenty powerful and I'm sure they will keep these big luxury boats coming as long as the income stream is there. I'm skeptical that regulations are or will be in place before these ships form an ant-line all the way to Alaska.
btw, I do kayak, although I tend to stick to freshwater on local excursions. I checked out Puget Soundkeepers just the same and glad someone is out there monitoring water quality, etc.Posted 10 months ago # -
DOH Alert! Could be the Sacramento Kings are going to Virginia Beach!
http://sacramento.cbslocal.com/2012/08/23/report-kings-could-be-moving-to-virginia-beach/
Posted 9 months ago # -
Too small of a market for the $150 million transfer fee. They wont do it. The league denies it, the owners deny it. They have two better options in us and Anaheim.
Posted 9 months ago # -
They ALWAYS deny it before they announce it. ALWAYS.
Anyway, Chris should develop his property without star-studded idiots and Council crooks. I parked on his property Tuesday night for my yellow King's Court T-shirt, great game, nearly 40,000 in attendance, and it was a nightmare to avoid $30 parking, packed roads, exacerbated by a water main break and road closures thanks to a crumbling infrastructure.
If you folks really want a first class city, dump all of the clowns. It would be comical if it was free comedy. It's first class expense for two-bit trollops that play a shell game with constant promises of happy endings.
Sacramento is moving, and it won't be here, unless they want to get buried in a 3 billion dollar tunnel project along with the rest of you, minus a reach-around. fwiw.

Looks like the Longshoremen are going to sue, trying to force an environmental review, sounds like another project we know....

From what I've seen and heard from a long line of Longshoremen, they couldn't give two spits about anything beyond break-time and their day of retirement.
This is nothing short of lawyers looking to bilk as many millions from Chris as possible.
Welcome back to Seattle, Chris, thanks for the beer. I'll return the favor as soon as you give all these crooks the finger. Publicly. The whole finger, don't spare us.

The stars are aligning to bring the Sonics back to Seattle. Mr Stern don't let the door hit you in the arse. I am personally not a big NBA fan but welcome any major league sports team to the region. They are like cats where you just can't stop at one ;)
NBA Commissioner David Stern will retire on Feb. 1, 2014, 30 years after he took charge of the league. He will be replaced by Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver.
The announcement came at an NBA Board of Governors meeting Thursday.Posted 7 months ago # -

I guess it's a bit humorous you think Silver is any better than Stern, and it has any bearing on local clusterfacebooking.
Oh well, I don't want to queer a good daydream. /sarcasm

NBA Commissioner David Stern disclosed Thursday that he will retire Feb. 1, 2014 after 30 years in office. Along with Stern's announcement came a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports that among Stern's agenda items in his last two years is to ensure that professional basketball is returned to Seattle. "The NBA is indeed leaning on the Maloofs to sell their franchise so that it could be relocated to Seattle," Wojnarowski reported.
Posted 7 months ago # -
Interesting especially coming from SI
SI.com reports a rumor that Chris Hansen, the investor who is building the city a new arena, has bought the team and is moving it here.
Early this morning Daina Falk, the daughter of NBA agent David Falk, tweeted that the Maloofs had sold the team to the group from Seattle.
The Maloofs who own the team aren’t talking. At least not much.
Posted 5 months ago # -
BH, it continues :
Regarding the rumor, a Kings spokesman said, “The rumors regarding the team being sold are simply not true.”
Maloofs spokesman Eric Rose said of the rumor: “As we have said for nearly a year, we have been contacted by several cities and parties interested in the Sacramento Kings organization. The announcement yesterday from Virginia Beach does not change our long-held position that we will not comment on rumors or speculation about the franchise.”

If you think Stern is done screwing us yet, you need to pull your head out of your ass.
But, I think the NBA is all bling and no sting, but boy, do they love to sport a stinger.
Maybe we'll get an expansion team, like the Storm or the Mist, just waiting to get screwed.
As long as you need to get screwed by the NBA before you feel complete, go for it. Maybe they'll promise not to screw us again, lol. Bring on the Who now.
Posted 1 month ago # -
Looks like a no.
Posted 1 month ago # -
Expansion 2014-2015. Hansen bought the land, he's gonna build it. Either that or rezone his land and build whatever else he wants to.
Posted 1 month ago # -
Well at least we still have a lingere football team!
Posted 1 month ago # -
I honestly don't care if we get the NBA back or not. However, I do not like my city being dissed. David Stern in particular is a total doucher (can I say that?). I am curious to find out how each NBA owner voted. I have heard that Paul Allen voted to move them to Seattle (thank goodness for that). Anyone know who the rest of the 8 who voted to move the team are?
Posted 1 month ago # -
Stern is a professional a*shole. And with Clay Bennet the head of the committee, I'm sure it was not going to happen. I mean Seattle sued him! Frankly I'm glad we did! He actually thought he could walk away from his lease at Key Arena. I'm sure for him it was just sticking it to people he thought stuck it to him.
Posted 1 month ago # -
The painful bit for me is the new team needing the Key while the new place is built. That place gets a lot of bookings these days.
Posted 1 month ago # -
I'd say build it, get a hockey franchise, get pay-per-view on Seattle screwing Stern nightly, tag team Shultz when Stern becomes even more flaccid.
My two cents.
Except, I'm still pissed about all the 'done deal' crap from all of you idiots.
I told you so.
Posted 1 month ago # -
I do believe KIRO's Danny O'Neil called David Stern a "hollow, crusty-hearted little creature" this morning, which was an appropriate description. I'd also add "snide", and maybe "vindictive". Perhaps even the infamous female-reproductive-organ-irrigation-vessel word. But the good news is that Stern's replacement doesn't appear to have the same troll-like attributes. Still, it sucks that Stern didn't help our 2008 Sonics like he helped the 2013 Kings.
I don't know who the other eight were, but I'd bet Cuban would be one of them. He's the only other owner I'm familiar with besides PA, and doesn't mind going against a majority. And, giving a team back to Seattle seems like something he'd support.
But I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.
Posted 1 month ago # -
Cuban was not one, fwiw.
One was our own, the Trail Blazers owner, PA.
I still don't care.
Posted 1 month ago # -
Cuban was not one, fwiw.
Oops, my bad. But good thing I didn't actually bet on my speculation!
Posted 1 month ago # -
oneder - so since you seem to know who the 8 were - who were they? I knew about Paul Allen. I know you don't care, but I am very curious. Please do tell.
