Seagulls change their call?

I have lived here for a decent amount of time.

In that time, I swear the local seagull-type birds have gone from the more classic "awrr-awrr" to a more scratchy, evil-sounding call.

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed this? maybe this is some rival gang of terns that has moved into our territory?

I know that sound. It's a different type of seagull. Slightly smaller with a scratchy call.

Its not just you....we've been hearing them. Honestly it took my husband and I awhile to figure out it was the seagulls making the sound. (It was literally hearing and seeing the bird at the same time; originally thought the sound was the strays were getting into fights.)

I was thinking it was the herons, they make a similar sound. I did the same and looked up to see that is was a couple of gulls making that noise.

Are they smart enough to imitate herons for some reason? Maybe they are really those new fangled, natural looking drones and they've gotten the bird call mixed up in their programming.

Its natural selection. The crows are more formidable but are unknowingly forcing the hand of natural selection such that we are now a few generations in to a new bada*s population of seagulls who are much more accustomed to the meaner streets.

    And they squak HARD!

Herons make a similar squak, but not as high pitched as the small gulls.
