Just have to give a shout out to El Chupacabra up on Phinney and 63rd... the hubby and I may have been the only patrons over 40 but the food and drinks were excellent. The enchilada sauce was especially amazing.

I enjoy the food there and they got a sweet collection in the jukebox but I wish I was more cool enough to be welcomed there.

seriously? I was there tonight with my chums and we are none too cool.
the margariatas were good but the food was so-so.

We were almost there last night too :) We didn't know if it would be crowded or not so we ended up elsewhere.

"We didn't know if it would be crowded or not so we ended up elsewhere."
Sounds like the Yogi Berra quote: "Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded."

too true, Cheese. We try to go off times to most places and by the time we realized we wanted food, it was 6pm.

For Seattle, El Chupacabra was pretty dang good - that is until El Camion and La Carta de Oaxaca came around.
However, it is still worth going to El Chupacabra for the divey yet family friendly atmosphere. You don't have to be cool to go there - yet you can revel in the coolness.

Been there twice and both times it was "meh". If you grew up in Seattle I could see why you might think it's good. Having spent time in California, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona OTOH I'm a bit spoiled. Finding decent Mexican food in Seattle is like finding decent seafood in New Mexico or Arizona - you're simply in the wrong part of the world and you're going to have to learn to lower your bar. El Camion, Oaxaca, Cocina Esperanza and Senor Moose are all MUCH better. Senor Moose actually surprised me. I'd avoided the place for years simply due to the name alone. With a name like that you expect something like a salmon burrito drowning in melted cheese.

SeaSpider, you may also like Fonda La Catrina in Georgetown.
Also, Restaurant Michoacan IF you order the right things. They do have the requisite cheese glop (and it is yummy in the way of that sort of food), but their moles are also excellent. Try the leg of lamb in red mole, or enchiladas in green mole.
Finally, the name escapes me but we enjoyed the newish Mexican food place across from Uneeda Burger in Fremont (old location of Fremont Classic, RIP). Yeah, I like the food better at El Camion, but this place has a much more attractive patio. The food tastes good and a standard margarita is only $3 and comes in a smallish glass with a decent kick, fresh lime juice, and little or no sugar syrup.

Mexican food snobbery, just another annoying trait of California transplants. Go back to where you came from.
Posted 11 months ago # -
@ NW Native: It's no more snobbery than someone from Seattle complaining about the lack of good seafood in Arizona. It's a simple reality of geography - certain regions are known for certain cuisines. Maybe if you actually lived outside of Seattle you might realize this! Native Seattlites can be extremely snobby sometimes, as you clearly demonstrate. BTW I'm not a California transplant. I lived there but I've also lived in plenty of other places and for longer periods of time.
@ Angeline: You're right about Michoacan. Keep hearing about Fonda but never make it down to Georgetown.

I didn't realize detesting transplants who show up and start telling us to do things like they do back in whereevertheyarefromistan was being snobby. My apologies.
Posted 11 months ago # -
We possess a plethora of options thanks to transplants, idiot.
As a 'native', lol, you should stfu.
No, I don't expect a good salmon anywhere but here, but I appreciate a good effort else-where.
Plus one for Sushi (transplanted), Pho (transplanted), Enchilada platters (transplanted), Pizza (transplanted), Lutefisk (transplanted).

Classy as always, onederfullone.

FWIW, the best Mexican food I've had was in......wait for it.......Mexico!

Don't drink the water.

What about the little mexican food truck/shed over their by Home Depot on 99? Has anyone from California or the Northwest eaten there? I'd love to hear about it. I would try it myself but don't like eating so close to prostitutes trolling for seconds.
Posted 11 months ago # -
No labor shortage there, fwiw...
Posted 11 months ago # -
edog, that is another of El Camions' locations. the food is exellent, ambiance lacking of course - but rarely does a food truck have any.
Posted 11 months ago # -
@Edog...that's El Camion. They also have a truck by the old Blockbuster on 15th (now it's a pet store?). Same food, less prostitutes. You should give it a shot. I think it's quite good.
edit: Eric won.

"FWIW, the best Mexican food I've had was in......wait for it.......Mexico!"
But down there, it isn't Mexican food.... it's just food....

Min for Oaxaca!Posted 11 months ago # -
Oaxaca cracks me up. Roach Coach food at idiot neo Seattlite prices. Add in bad service and umcomfortable and the Ballardites are happy.

BriarRose is right, you know.

Never had bad food at El Camion, prices are low. (especially those fish tacos!) Service is dandy. There are chairs to sit in and the grub is excellente. (this from a frequent Mexico traveler)
