Anyone actually buy from these guys? At best it's totally sketchy or it's just a total scam. And this guy knocked on my side door (carport) and not our front entrance. Of course we have a no soliciting sign on the front... maybe that was his way around it. He left very quickly when I said no thanks.

His line was that he delivers to some of my neighbors (dubious...) and his boss wants him to go around to other homes to offer their "good beef" for sale. (What I wonder is if you are a delivery service of perishable product why do you take more than just your delivery orders on the road?)

This whole thing felt weird to me. Can anyone confirm my suspicions or set me straight if I've gotten the wrong impression?

they should try these raw beef food-trucks in Japan maybe.

I could go for some Bashimi right about now.

Ask him if he lives in the van down by the river.

There have been reports like this in previous years -- pretty likely to be scams or burglars-to-be casing the community.

If someone that you don't know knocks on anything other than your obvious front door, that person is almost certainly either trying to break in to your home, or "casing" the joint in preparation for coming back later to break into your home. Count on it.

You should ALWAYS call 911 if this happens. If you don't, you're just asking to have your and your neighbors home broken into, that day or very soon.

People, wake the facebook up! Ballard is a very high crime neighborhood. Break-ins are happening all around you, every day. If you don't push back against these creeps, your house WILL be next.

we're awake, we just don't think calling 911 for every little thing is effective.

If some sketchy character knocks on your side door, his story and his entire demeanor just smells extremely funky, and you just shrug and say "well, that was weird, wasn't it?", then yes, you are asleep and oblivious to the fact that someone just attempted to break into your house. I hope the neighbors on my street are not as clueless.

The more that kind of "it was just a little thing" gets naively shrugged off as unimportant, the more crime we all will experience - this is exactly how and why Ballard is sliding into sewer - because too many people want to believe that if they just clap harder, it'll all go back to the pleasant, safe neighborhood it was not so long ago. The apologists and deniers only enable the criminals. Thanks for encouraging the next break in.

    I wouldn't simply shrug.

however I wouldn't call the police. suspicion is subjective and unless I'm suspicious that someone has committed a truly serious crime, I wouldn't bother the police. if I actually witness them committing a lesser crime, I would and have called the police.

I would also be on higher alert and probably e-mail my neighbors to convey the circumstances.
I might see what vehicle they're driving and note that information and other descriptions.
and lastly I'd give my dog a treat if there was any barking or snarling, which there would be.

To say that Ballard is "sliding into the sewer" is just silly.

It slides into Golden Gardens on occasion. That might count.

I had these guys stop by my house. Same spiel heard above: "the people that used to live here ordered from us all the time. a lot of your neighbors do. we're running a special today, half-off frozen steaks with a money-back guarantee up to a year."

I asked him for a brochure that detailed their guarantee, that it was truly organic (which he said but wasn't) and he kept fighting back and saying that no he didn't want to give us a brochure and why would we have any concerns if there's a money back guarantee. He finally provided a brochure which looked suspect, I told them I wasn't interested, they left, I googled and turns out "steaks from a truck" is a scam in nearly every city in the US. Never organic steaks. The guarantee never works. Steaks are tiny and taste like rubber, bad grades from BBB.

They're certainly not crooks in the thief-sense as suggested above, but they are a completely illegitimate business that give legit ones like Schwan's a bad name (although I wouldn't order from those guys either.)

Stay away from steaks on a truck.

Joe, just because they're running a known scam doesn't mean they're not also burglars casing the house or neighborhood.

I agree with JoeMan. I don't think a burglar would go through the trouble of buying/renting a truck, hiring a graphic designer to create a logo/brand, then painting this on the side of the truck/ creating business cards, etc.

also they have to actually carry around a few steaks for the occasional "sure I'd like some beef" reply they get.
