My poor dog seems to have a retrobulbar abscess below his eye, perhaps due to a fractured tooth. Our current vets prices seem pretty high to me--cost us $120 for the first exam, and they want us to come in again for an xray that is going to cost $180, not to mention the fee for the visit... and that's not even going to cover any treatment. My husband is transitioning to a new job right now and I need to find a more affordable option if possible... Can anyone recommend a decent vet who they've found to be affordable?

That does seem a bit high to me -- for one thing a follow-up visit for an x-ray should be done by a tech. But if it is a fractured tooth--dental costs are pretty high I think about everywhere. I have heard of a place down south, Vets for Less in Federal Way that supposedly does teeth cleaning for around $200 -- where my vet (Family Pet) costs around $600 especially if some teeth need to be pulled. I won't trade my vet, Mary Kay Hilmoe, but if you aren't married to your vet and you have the time to head to Federal Way (another one in Puyallup) you might consider it. I was fostering a male doxie that needed to be neutered -- costs at all vets in and around Ballard were about the same $300+, the spay and neuter clinic did it for me for $125 or so but they don't do anything but spay/neuter. Good luck. I also take one dog to the Animal Eye Clinic on Roosevelt -- Drs. Sullivan and Landry for eye issues. These guys are fabulous but I don't know if they would see your dog for this issue and you are supposed to be referred from your regular vet.

I was at Pet Smart & stopped in at the vet there. Heard about their pet insurance. It is so worth it - $31 a month for the "plus" coverage - which will include my little kitten's spaying when it comes time. Office calls are free. Will cover her vaccinations, exams and tests.

PetSmart Banfield is not insurance, it's more like a prepaid plan. if your pet dies, you still have to keep paying your premiums until your contract is up.

ironymaiden - I didn't see anything in the literature about contract.

They also train their own Vet at UNAM in Mexico city They opened the school in 2005, I think that this only provides Vet training to the "company way" - My opinion only.

ironmaiden - after reading your comment I decided to further research. You were right. It is not insurance and is a prepaid plan. Having doubts about going there.
