Kudo's for video security, everyone should be doing it.

I don't know if it's okay for the forum terms of use, fwiw.

She took a locked wooden jewelry box, probably figured it had jewelry in it, but mostly it has my passport, expired credit cards, personal stuff. I think it won't be difficult finding someone who recognizes her.

yes, I think the burglar needs to sign a waiver or consent form to have her picture displayed on the site.

agreed she should be easy to recognize based on the clear image.

you'd think facebook would have some algorithm where they could identify her from the photo.

It does, google images does pretty good, but law enforcement is even better for face recognition, if they choose to use it.

This may even be related to the Woodinville case, where a male suspect is in ICU, female suspect still at large. I'd like to see the sketch.

Chances are she's not local, because she looks older than a bored and broke high school kid.

If I were going to rob a house in daylight, I would certainly dress like a "regular person" and act like I just happened to live there and didn't need money. Additionally, females tend to arouse less suspicion. As an extra bonus, she's a white female. She'll get far in the cat burglary world (probably has) and you'll notice she doesn't get greedy - she goes straight for what might be jewelry and identity theft stuff. No need for hard to carry, harder to fence stuff like stolen tvs, etc.

I hope you can get the police interested and catch her. In the meantime, you've probably already started mitigating your damage with credit cards and other identity issues. It's definitely worth getting a new number on your cards and keeping a close eye on things even a few months from now.

Exactly, phoo! I was also struck by how "normal for Ballard" she looks then wondered what I expected out of a thief. Black cape and a mask?

I tried a Google Images search and the algorithm thought she might be Madonna!

@RichY - big scruffy guy in a black mask? :O) - interesting though - I do agree a clean cut woman "casing the joint" probably invokes less neighborly suspicion, as silly as that is - something to bear in mind if nothing else.

I don't know David. She looks so much like anyone else in the neighborhood, it makes me wonder if she actually does not belong. Are you sure you don't know her, or know someone who knows her?

I mean, of all things, why take a locked wooden box? I sounds very personal to me.

look at the way she's skulking about the place, as if she knows David is sitting in the 'control center' watching a wall of screens depict her every move.

this woman knew what she was doing. the way she peers in the window then takes off her hoodie as if she belongs up there.

I wonder how much she will get for the passport?

It's a reminder that we're all suspicious of people who look like thugs but if people look like they belong, we don't question it. She is a bit furtive looking, despite the non-thug look though.

I'm curious about the locked jewelry box though. If it can be carried out and easily opened, why lock it? I'm not questioning the victim, it's just my thought process. Oddly enough, I have relatives who were victims of burglary. The people took loose change, stamps, everything they could find that they thought was of value. Strangely enough the main things of value weren't taken because they weren't stored in such a way that made them look valuable. They were stored in ziplock bags, oddly enough.

I've noticed that since the 18 yr old (what was his name?) Ballard HS guy got arrested, our daytime burglaries have decreased dramatically.

I'm happy to report that we have a tentative identification by a neighbor as a person who used to bring things into the Buffalo Street Exchange to get money for a drug habit. I have her name but will not reveal her at this time. The police are on it, and I am pursuing the lead myself at this time.

You will excuse me if I choose not to answer all your questions, but I can tell you that I use a surveillance system sold by Costco. I have 6 cameras, 4 of them on each door on the outside and 2 inside at places where a burglar would pass in front of the camera. The main picture comes from a camera focussed on my inside stairway. It took me a day or two, with the help of a friend or two to set it up several years ago. It is motion-sensitive and saves everything for about 2 weeks. It also has remote access, so I can check up on my house anytime I have access to the internet.

The cameras are easy to see, and in fact that is part of the discouragement factor. This girl, however, seemed completely oblivious to them.

If you are this person, by the way, or know her, I would encourage her to give me the wooden jewelry box back and things might go better for her.

Could you say how much this system cost? It really seemed to work for you. Also, what does it record to? How much hard drive space? Is there a way for someone to set them up without too much access/property damage if they are renting?

I have noticed that people have a tendency to rarely look up unless they catch motion in the corner of their eye, which is why she probably did not notice the cameras.

Best of luck to all in finding the perp! Bringing this person to justice could help every single one of us who could be a potential "mark" (sitting duck) for this common criminal. Great work with the surveillance system---I have a hunch that as time goes by and population density increases in Ballard, more drugs are distributed in parks, libraries, and under overpasses, more booze stores and bars replace other types of businesses, more decisions are made that erode the already marginal sense of community, etc., more of us in the area will find video systems comforting and, perhaps, a necessity.

Thanks for showing how it's done.

Costco often has them on sale. It appears that you can get a 4-camera system with 1TB of storage for $499 and a 16-camera system for $799. http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?prodid=11602522&whse=BC&topnav=&cm_sp=RichRelevance-_-categorypageHorizontalTop-_-PopularProductsInCategory&cm_vc=categorypageHorizontalTop

Depending upon your landlord, of course, it would probably be possible to set up a rental. There's just some small drill holes. The cameras come with the necessary hardware.

There are lots of new products available.

This woman has been observed multiple times in the Ballard area. She was discussed in at least one night-out event Tuesday. Her pattern of behavior is to go knock on your door. If you don't answer, doors will be tried. If you do answer, she claims she is "looking for someone" you've never heard of.

Please - Call 9-1-1 if you see her. What she is doing is suspicious activity, suspected burglar and is rightfully a 9-1-1 call.

Thank you for your help. I have reached a bit of an impasse, because the policeman on my case won't be back at work until Saturday. Obviously I would like to find my stuff before it's all gone. Also, I have some more information on the woman, and you are right. She is associated with some very dangerous people. One person told me her boyfriend has been known to shoot people.

Sunsethill - don't wait to talk to the police officer. You should call the north burglary unit. See if detective assigned & he/she is the one to talk to. If not, then ask for the sergeant. Make sure to have your case number because they will ask for that. They do the follow up work. The phone number is 684-5735.
And I printed out a copy of one of her photos to carry in my car. If I happen to see her, I plan to call 911.

one - do you know Dave and have a contact for him? If so, would you shout out to him to read what I wrote about calling Burglary. There is no need to wait until Saturday for the officer. The officer takes the report - the detectives do the follow up.
I see your concern. They claim a burglar strikes once - let's hope that is the case here. I'm sure Dave is making sure his house is very secure. Secure or not still makes one uneasy.
Maybe he could borrow Waldo - looks big enough to tackle a burglar!

    Clearly that is Callista Gingrich.

She seems to be focused on a desperate search for more funding to maintain her impossibly rigid helmet...er, hairstyle, which looks to be in a sad state of deterioration here in SHD's vid capture.

She may be dangerous although her husband hasn't shot anyone. Her cohort Dick Cheney however, has been known to shotgun people in the face.

Seriously though, thanks for the Costco tip Sunset Hill David. I'm going to look into that set up.

I hope you get your stuff back.

Costco's system was easy enough to setup, out of the box on Windows or Mac systems.

I asked around, and some other options are:

    Foscam FI8908W indoor
Foscam FI8918W indoor (if you want pan/tilt)
    Foscam FI8905W outdoor
A nicer outdoor camera that also supports POE (power over ethernet) is the Toshiba IK-WB70A or Vivotek IP7142

These are all 640x480. 800x600 is better if you want to spend the money. Keep in mind that you also need to run power wires to cameras that do not support POE. The Foscam cameras can do wireless however I don't recommend it as it impacts performance/quality.

The software is "zoneminder" and is best installed on Ubuntu desktop 10.04LTS. The software does its own motion detection so I recommend some good CPU horsepower. I used a Core i7 3770S CPU + DH77DF motherboard + Antek ISK110-vesa case.
