I can't believe I didn't read this anywhere. The night before last, some guy bought something in the 76 station, then went out to his car and purposely smashed into one of the gas pumps, knocking it over and starting it on fire, then drove off! It was about 3:50am. I didn't even budge from my sleep and I live about 50 feet away! I went into the station and talked to the guy who works there. He put out the fire with the emergency gas shutoff switch. Apparently, there were several fire trucks and police at the scene. He showed me a picture of the guy taken with the cameras they have on the premises. It was a white dude with a trimmed goatee beard and mustache wearing a baseball cap, driving a red chevy pickup. The guy who works at the 76 station said the guy who did it didn't seem drunk. His words were, "He seemed fine to me." The hit-and-runner is still out there. Did anyone else know about this? I did a cursory google search and can't find anything about it. Damn!

I noticed that on my run Monday morning and again this morning. Also surprised that it was never mentioned on the front page (kinda).

I forgot about that. You had some great suggestions for dealing with those types of folks. Life has been really good at the office as the Queen of Eavesdroppers is on vacation - party time!!!

Man, that was the best video I've ever seen of a perp. (not that I've seen that many). Anybody who knows that guy would not mistake him at all.

    Go get 'em peacemaker.

Looks to me like he didn't do it on purpose, but accidentally backed into it & decided to flee the scene rather than be a responsible adult and deal with it in a responsible manner.

He probably took off before he knew there were flames involved & how serious his "bump" actually was.

Prejudgemental on my part, but I have to wonder if he wasn't driving impaired for him to think that his little mishap wasn't being recorded at a gas station fer chrissake.

Wow. Amazing footage. Yeah, does look like an accident. But lo
oks like he knew what he did. I think he looked nervous in the store. Maybe has a record already and doesn't need another strike. Police was close enough probably could have caught the guy. And what's up with that kid watching the fire? I'd be running away as fast as possible!

I wouldn't say he looked nervous in the store. in fact, he's making small talk with the cashier (would've been interesting to hear the audio).
he doesn't look drunk or jacked up on pills.

    agreed it does look accidental.

"I have to wonder if he wasn't driving impaired for him to think that his little mishap wasn't being recorded at a gas station fer chrissake"
yes, but with no video of the license plate, he will probably never be caught.

You will never hear any audio. It's pretty much illegal to record voice. Runs afoul of laws associated with wiretapping and such.

strange that video-taping someone unknowingly is legal, but audio-taping is not (although I'm sure you're right bamboo)

I suppose someone really good at lip-reading could deduce what the dude said.

People complain about the police presence in Ballard, but the cop was on the scene in less than a minute!

I agree, looks like a DUI type of accident.

Hi Gracie! I don't check in as much because I'm trying to be more social! You know, in the real world. ;-) Been going waltzing and stuff! Sorry I didn't wake up for this one, though! I mentioned this story to The Geeky Swedes, maybe they will give it a boost!
