that would be a funny practical joke to go down there and round up the 6-8 scruffiest guys you can find and give them five bucks each to go get a cheap drink at the Bastille.

tell them there's some free eats in the backroom and they will make themselves comfortable amongst the cartoon yuppies.

So what if it's a yuppie joint.

We can be zen and accepting of all.
Cool angst ridden 20 somethings wearing the latest trying-to-look-like-I'm-not-trying styles,
Regular folks with jeans and tshirts
and even those of us 50 somethings that are barely taking the time to shower and change out of the muddy gardening duds.

It'll be fun. We can talk politics ;)

LIA, I'm sorry. Securing the Tasmanian Wilderbeast Compound takes some planning. I'm not able to sneak out without much notice. I will submit a leave request for next time, so there is not a breach in security.

It was fun! The person who organized it was just someone who had done people organizing in the past and decided that ballardites were too busy hiding and being hermits behind their tv and not being social enough.

I did not see anyone from the forums (other than LIA), but most people did in fact come from a MyBallard notice of one sort or another. Interestingly, most people were unaware of the forums, but either got their news in email or read the homepage. In fact, the organizer had no idea there was a whole community of ballardites in the forum. Perhaps we'll see her sign up soon.

Many thanks to LIA, it was three times the fun with a friend(s)!

It'd be really cool if there was a MyBallard casual game night. Card Kingdom has game nights on thursday and they are fun, but they are often the complicated gamer games. They tend to get bored with simple games like Fluxx which are really easy to learn to play. I also have Card Against Humanity which is super fun to play in a group and takes almost no learning (http://cardsagainsthumanity.com/). We can also do some of the retro games and whatever people like to play. I've got 2 different word based card games, scrabble, dominoes, Parcheesi, etc, etc. And of course a regular deck of cards that is Southpark themed.

It turned out to be pleasant.

Met a couple of nice people, chatted with phoo, ordered my usual tall screwdriver with two green olives from one of the few bartenders that didn't say "Olives?".
When he brought it he said he'd now named it the Salty Screw. Well, I may not be famous but maybe my drink will be. (BTW they actually put alcohol in their drinks.)

I talked with the woman that started it. She didn't try and sell me a time share, Tupperware or god so if she's selling, it must be subliminal. I'll let you know if I show up at some church tomorrow armed with cupcakes needing a burping storage container.

That drink is in my brain now, I may have to try it just to see how the orange juice works with the vinegar in the olives. The salty sounds great, but my brain just can't get a 100% picture since if I ever eaten those olives, I don't remember them well.

It was great talking with A about cooking. Peanutbutter burger!

LIA: Look out, she may have compromised your brain. Report immediately for deprogramming if you start thinking R-74 is a bad idea. ;)

There's a good way to identify MyBallard forum users - everyone orders a Salty Screw. ;)

Cate: We should totally do that! We don't have to stick to the Mox either. I like them, but they can be pretty crowded during peak times. Here's a hillarious thought: game night at the Viking. They don't even use the tables much - the bar fills up first. Food is kinda crap though. People's Pub has lots of room, but kinda small tables, if I remember correctly. And overly busy at some points as well.

Oh and the drink? I just like green olives. I also like screwdrivers. Bartenders won't hand out olives as appetizers so to get them I once ordered them on my drink. They were across the top on a toothpick but they fell in and by the time I dug them out they were soaked with the drink and .... yum, a star was born. Been doin' it ever since.

And sorry hawk, no doilies but I do know how to crochet so if your heart is set on a toilet paper cover let me know.

OK, Great Idea you're the winner! Here's what i found out.

I had spoken with Andrea (the organizer) at the social. She introduces herself and doesn't make any secret of who she is. I asked her why she did it and she said she kept seeing all these new condos with windows glowing that blue TV light and thought that it would be great if all those people were out meeting each other.

Kinda cool but this thread made me curiouser and curiouser so here is the question I sent through the website.

Hi, I went to your social and had a nice time ......we're wondering....it sin't cheap to advertise on My Ballard. May I ask what group is footing the bill for that and why?
    Thanks

She emailed and asked if she could call to explain. Here's a synopsis of the phone call:

She is footing the bill herself.

As far as not putting her name on everything, there's a few reasons; she doesn't know how far this is going to go or how much she is going to want to put into it, she is a business owner and wants to keep the two separate (Ah ha!! So she ISN'T trying to bring business to her business) and if she doesn't want to do it anymore it will be easier to pass on to someone else if it is just Ballard Social.
Now that I think about it, doesn't Andrea's Social sound kind of stupid?

She said she came on the Forum and read through this thread and was cracking up. "I can assure you this isn't part of any church and I'm not getting kickbacks from anyone!"
She did say she is considering bringing Tupperware and timeshare opportunities to the next one though (for those of you who are very literate - she was kidding). She laughed and said "OK, I don't know what is weird about me but I like doing this"

To me it sounds like a lark and, hey if she can afford it then great.

It doesn't sound any weirder than my late husband spending a fortune of time and money on his time trial race car so that 4 times a year he could spend more of a fortune on fuel to race across the desert at 250 miles per hour for nothing but a trophy, social time with his racing buddies and a car that has now shaken apart and needs more money and time to be put back together before the next race.

Uhhh lets see, why would a person do that? It made him happy.

Andrea looked like she was having a great time meeting all the people and introducing people to each other. She likes it, she's good at it so.....

Lia: We HAVE to bring tupperware to the next one!

We may not want to mention her name though, in order to keep her name out of it as she wishes. Stuff in print is forever. "A" would be a good name for her.

Once you speak to her, you can see that it comes from a genuine place. She just sees all this disconnection and wants to do what she can to remedy that.

Everyone has different skills and most of those skills keep us away from other people, such as hiding in an office, hiding behind your computer, etc. She's got a skill to bring people together. Frankly, the NW could use it!

Dang that spell check, it's supposed to read my mind. Or maybe I'm supposed to read the replacement word and not just hit enter.

Oh, and as for putting in her name, I said that I'd like to post our conversation and asked her if I should put in her name and she said fine. In fact I sent her my post first to see if she felt it was accurate and her return email said:

Its great! That's so nice of you to run it by me. Thank you :)

I think one reason everyone is questioning "what group is behind it" is because of how Seattle is. I know people don't like to think of it this way, but Seattle is pretty darn corporate. We aren't really used to one person running something. Everything is a feeding frenzy for recruiters, sell you something, join a group (like a church), company party, or ask for donations, etc. It's kinda sad, really.

True. But you know. Even if this became something that could make money for her. Like maybe the website could sell advertising or she could start working with the different venues that doesn't seem like a bad thing.
