I don't really give a crap if a troll doesn't want us to post news that isn't relevant. If anyone has family or friends on the East Coast I have only good thoughts. Hunker down.

Wow. So it's just a cat chat here? How about I say that a kitten might have been injured?

    cats and crockpot recipes.

Yeah, I've been looking at the pictures. And I'm not sure the whole news thing was quite what you're thinking, at least I was thinking something different. This IS relevant, many of us have relatives, etc., back east.

I've been trying to follow this all day...just amazing the power of nature.
We have friends in Long Island City that have been posting pictures of their neighborhood; scary stuff!

If you cross an injured (i) kitten with an uninjured (I) kitten, what percent kittens will be heterozygoats?

Sorry, have too much grading, and trying not to think of all those animals on the East coast.

I posted my concerns about the homeless animals on fb. I worry about them. People can somewhat take care of themselves.

can people take care of themselves?

aren't there thousands of people that live 'underground' in NYC in abandoned tunnels?

somehow I doubt anyone warned them.

there's probably some biblical passage about 'flushing them clean'

honestly I agree with PG. yourFriend appeared when Ballardbuzz was 86ed. Streaker troll family tree shows no remorse IMHO.

I had a friend from Delaware that quit posting this afternoon at 1, 2 friends from the DC area stopped posting after they said their lights were flickering. This was the last post from a friend just above NYC in which he posted this picture of his shed almost being blown away from the storm. Then a tree came down on the shed when he tried to stabilize the shed. Haven't heard from him since.

    http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b34/bills_whippet/16995_10151232034719785_955206409_n.jpg

"Yes that lighter object in the upper left hand corner is what used to be my 10 x 10 shed.... the wind was strong enough to blow the doors in and lift it off the ground and into the woods. I think the only thing keeping it from going further was that it was tied to the other objects in the yard"

"ok, the shed is now dead. I went out to see what I could do to keep the shed from banging back and forth all night and making really loud noises. As I grabbed a piece of wood and started trying to wedge it under the shed to keep it from rocking, there was a loud cracking sound above me and half a tree fell and crushed the shed. I don't think I have jumped and run that fast in my life."

FWIW I also like the the wonderfully irresponsible parents that dragged their kids to the seawall just to watch the facebooking waves that you know are going to be dangerous.

I would suggest there is a difference between posting about isolated horrifying news stories and using a forum to support each other as we wonder and worry about loved ones in the midst of an event like the current storm. It can be profoundly powerful to realize how united we are at such times. I love that!

Penny, creating this thread is realizing the potential of the technology. More power to you! (and more power to our electricity deprived loved ones to the east...)

    Something we can do:

    From the CNN website -
"[Update 12:51 a.m.] More than 99 blood drives in the Northeast have been canceled due to Sandy. This is likely to create a blood shortage in the Northeast as emergency crews work to help those injured. To help with the anticipated shortage, the Red Cross is encouraging people throughout the country to donate blood. People can also donate $10 to disaster relief efforts by texting REDCROSS to 90999, or they can contribute online at www.redcross.org. “We are expecting to been a very long and difficult situation,” said spokeswoman Kristiana Almeida."

Relieved that my elderly Dad is safe in NJ. The power is out. His basement did not flood, so he's using his generator to run the fridge. He's keeping food for some of his neighbors. There's no heat in the house. I hope the outside temps will stay mild for the next week or so.

My neighbors elderly parents like in New Jersey & I couldn't help but wonder about them while I watched the coverage. Buffalo, I thought about you too since you came from New York. Hope you have been able to communicate with them to put your mind at rest.

I am from the Buffalo area so they didn't get it that bad. I have various friends that relocated to other place that got hit pretty hard.

    http://buffalonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20121030/CITYANDREGION/121039972/1002

It was a tale of two cities, one paralyzed and swamped by Superstorm Sandy’s wrath, the other escaping mostly unscathed from the remnants of the one-time hurricane.

As the New York City area tries to dig itself out from the combined hurricane and nor’easter that tossed a 13-foot surge of seawater at that region, the Buffalo area coped mostly with a nasty weather night and early morning punctuated by heavy rain and wind, some scattered cases of downed trees and a few thousand – not tens of thousands – residents losing electrical power.

What a difference 400 miles can make.

Glad to hear your dad is safe Jersey Girl - I've been thinking about my elderly aunt in CT all night - she lives in one of those senior complexes, and despite needing a walker herself, is the transportation for many of her neighbors as she's the only one who still drives - hoping they were all evacuated early.

It's pretty mind boggling - the sheer scale of this thing - the numbers being impacted are so huge. There's a interesting/scary slideshow of pics over on Yahoo news that really brings it all home.

Thanks for posting the "how we can help link" Bio -

BH - Give me a break! How can somebody be that STUPID? And criticize because Obama responding too quickly. Was it better when in New Orleans those poor people sitting on roofs for days on end waiting for help. Remember one scene particularly where it was like an overpass where huge group got stuck & in the sun. A person died in their wheelchair because they couldn't get help.

  25. My nephew's house is gone. His wife, 3 kids are staying at my brother's house and can stay there indefinitely. My brother's beach house, hardly used, is gone. My best friend's son's house where he lives with his wife and 3 kids is gone. Her mother's house has a lot of water in it, as does her sister's house. All of them, except for BFF lived in Breezy Point Queens. Between flooding and fire, no one except emergency workers (that' how bff's son and my nephew got in to check) can return there.

Right now, in Barbara's (BFF) 3 room apt which is barely big enough for both of us when I go to NYC, is Barbara, her mother, son, DIL, 3 kids, and now her son's in-laws are joining them (who just sold their home in Brooklyn and moved into newly built house in Breezy Point). Oh boy, 6 adults 3 kids!!!

All this, and my mother, who is OK thinks the worse part is that her son is stranded vacationing in Florida.

  30. Thankfully, my mother, other nephew and brother's house as well as Barbara's all have electricity, phone and no flooding. Breezy Point and neighboring area was ravaged by flooding from ocean and the bay and also from an enormous fire.

Thanks for your thoughts. I don't know if any of them have flooding insurance. They were under a mandatory evac, so were prepared to take clothing and necessities. Who knows what will be ongoing. I don't know how any of us can help other than thoughts.

I have been thinking of animals too (oh, forgot about the dog who is also at bff's now). I am sure the Brooklyn ASPCA will need help.

An article about the animals being impacted. So far they are thinking it might be better for the animals then Katrinia was as there are many animal-friendly shelters, apparently something learned from Katrinia. Still many hungry frightened animals out there I am sure.

I heard about this on the way home tonight.. What a phenomenal job they are doing.

    http://www.wptz.com/news/health/Hospital-helps-babies-during-evacuation/-/8869768/17188806/-/9sqtb8z/-/index.html

Roof-mounted emergency generators did kick in, but two hours later, about 90% of that power went out, and the hospital decided to evacuate patients.

The evacuation was completed by 11 a.m. Tuesday, according to a hospital statement.

Four newborns were on respirators that were breathing for them, and when the power went out, each baby was carried down nine flights of stairs while a nurse manually squeezed a bag to deliver air to the baby's lungs.

  41. My friend's son's in-laws finally got a hotel room-- after a week of 6 adults, 3 kids and a dog in a 3 room apt, there are "only" 3 adults, 3 kids and a dog. Actually, her son can't stand it anymore so he is sleeping at work!

Still haven't heard from anyone in the So. Orange/Montclair area nor the Westfield or Princeton area. I am so sorry for what they are going through.
