I've been reading all about the new androids being introduced and learning there are certain operating systems: froyo, gingerbread, ice cream sandwich, and now Jelly Bean. I have a year and a half old Samsung Gravity - froyo. Not knowing then what I am learning today I fell for it hook, line and sinker. I found a video showing me how to root my phone and then there are more things to do in order to get rid of some of the factory installed nonsense - that's the part that is confusing...has anyone ever rooted and unlocked your phone? Oh, and I wonder if it is legal????

If it is from T-Mobile, call them and they will send you the unlocking info (do this any way – you will need to borrow a ‘foreign’ not t-mobile SIM )–, if they need a reason, probably will not, just say you are going overseas they will email, or text you the instructions and code, follow them, Bobs your uncle now you can use any carrier’s gsm sim in your phone.
If it is from another carrier - use the info on the internet
Rooting will open a lot of features, and you will be able to install newer os for your phone - it will void the warranty so if you 'brick' it you may be SOL -
It is leagal, but may be against the use policy with ATT - that is they will not help you with any operation / coverage issues

The screen may present a requester asking to go into data mode, if not check out the book that came with the phone in the section "how to connect to you computer"

Yep, my phone can just recharge or can act like a drive when connected to a computer via USB port. It pops up a dialog asking which mode I want it to be in, but I know you can also set your phone to default to a certain mode and not ask you. If yours doesn't ask, it may be set to recharge-only as a default.

NC - I have rooted and unlocked my Samsung Captivate and other phones.
It can be easy but you need to read the instructions posted on line. Also, do you have a Mac, Windows or Linux computer? Each one has a different way of connecting to your phone via USB.
The folks at this web site: forum.xda-developers.com have information and files for just about any Android device.
However, these hacks take patience and persistence and if your phone is still under contract with T-Mobile, they won't help you if you "brick" your phone.Posted 6 months ago # -
In non-tech language what are you guys talking about? I have an Android that I'd like to switch to another carrier. Is that possible?

This is why I love being land locked.

Cate, yes - but if this phone was purchased with a plan, you will need to 'Unlock' it.
The locking helps prevents theft, and tries to keep the subscriber with the carrier. If this was a T-Mobile and you are a current customer, they will give you the info.
If it is ATT, or other carrier you will need to find the info online.
Check out plans from the carrier you want to use – they may have a plan/new phone package that is less hassle and inexpensive

Be careful before you put jelly bean or is on, make sure your phone can handle it. Should be a quick Google search.
I rooted my tablet and love it but am fearful to do it on my Verizon phone

Cate - like Richy said, T-Mobile and AT&T will give you the unlock codes (AT&T after 90 days) just tell them you are going to Europe and want to use a foreign SIM.
Both AT&T and T-Mobile use the GSM network.
If you have a Sprint or Verizon they use the CDMA network and do not use a SIM card.
If you have a AT&T or T-Mobile Android phone you can unlock it and just buy a SIM and use a cheap monthly service but not if you have a CDMA phone.Posted 6 months ago # -
Rich and Vegan - Thank you. My phone is from Sprint so it sounds like I'm stuck. Drat.
