Has anyone else heard this news? Puerto Rico could potentially end up being the newest state. But it's up in the air at this point.

As I understand it, it's anon-binding resolution, but it does move closer to statehood. Since there will almost certainly be partisan squabbles about how Puerto Rico would change the balance of the Senate as a state, I suggest that we encourage Eastern Washington to become a new state, thus bringing partisan balance back. Not coincidentally, it would also get rid of the freeloader counties that take far more in state spending than they return in revenue, all the while whining about taxes.

Actually, in 2008 the only counties that could stay would be the 4 from King on up north (Snohomish, Skagit, Whatcom), plus San Juan County and Kittitas (east of King County). That would certainly make for an interesting state.

Hasn't the main problem with Puerto Rican statehood always been the fact that they speak a different language than the 50 states?

I could be wrong, but I always understood that statehood referenda always failed there. If the Puerto Ricans didn't want statehood, then nobody else was going to get excited about it either.

Yep, it's a recurring issue. The people in Puerto Rico don't seem to want it that badly and there's little reason for the US to want them as a state. Unlike Hawaii or Alaska, PR has little to no strategic value.
