I've been trying to find humanly raised and slaughtered food for my cats and dog. I can find it but it's putting me in the poor house. You said your dog has been doing great on vegetarian. Can you tell me more about that? What about taurine? I thought they needed that. Thanks!

lia - I have been feeding my dog a vegan kibble : http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/product.aspx?ProductId=18&product=Vegetarian+Dry+Dog+Formula&ProductCategoryID=8&category=Dog+Dry+Formulas&ProductPage=2
for many years and he is very healthy. Looks a lot younger than he is, he is almost 12.
Dogs are omnivores and can live fine on a vegan diet.
Cats however are not and like you mention need taurine. Synthetic Taurine is available in vegan cat food and if your cat will eat it that is great. We have cats that are super picky eaters and try as we may they will only eat fish based food!
None of this food is cheap, the Natural Balance dog food cost $51 for the 28# bag!.
There are recipes to make your own vegan cat food and that might be cheaper.

Wow, thank you.
Odd how for years I eat meat rarely and if I do I have to verify for myself that it is handled humanely from beginning to end as I don't have a problem with the food chain per se but a lot of problem with how animals are treated, yet I went right on feeding my pets inhumanely handled meat. Weird I never thought of it.Posted 7 months ago #
