While I wouldn't go so far to call him "Betrayus" as perhaps only his wife can do that, Petraeus did let down his country, if only as the one of the few remaining conservative public figures who isn't certifiable. The dude got things done.
Posted 6 months ago # -
OK. Really???!
Let me say this sloooowwwwly so it's easy to understand.
You are in public office. You are married. You can't keep your pants zipped. Someone WILL find out.
Grow up. How hard is it to curb yourself?
I feel sorry for his wife. Can you say bobbitt?Posted 6 months ago # -
Obviously he wants to be James Bond 007.
Posted 6 months ago # -
Cheese is exactly right.
Posted 6 months ago # -
Yeah, yeah. (eyeroll) Like every other large ego political, royal or military official, male or female, for millenia have kept their genitals in their pants, codpieces, bloomers.
Obama got re-elected.
Obama doesn't like Petraeus.
Obama doesn't have enough toadies in the CIA to undo Petraeus.
Obama does have enough toadies in the FBI to sic 'em on the CIA.
If it weren't for an affair, the FBI would have disclosed Petraeus had been seen kicking his dog or jaywalking. The FBI investigating CIA computers?!? Give me a break. Is this kind of mischief just one part of why the USA has a terabuck deficit? I'm guessing yes.
I'm also guessing the CIA won't forget this move by Obama's team which will only add more to the deficit.
Posted 6 months ago # -
It appears that he was having an affair with the author of his biography who is being investigated for going into his emails and may have seen classified information. No big deal, right?
Posted 6 months ago # -
"I'm also guessing the CIA won't forget this move by Obama's team"
The CIA was a LOT more unhappy about Valerie Plame being outed as an agent.
Treason, that was.

Whatever you want to believe coming from a nest of vipers is fine with me, lillybelle.
Posted 6 months ago # -
iPlod...
Lillybelle is correct isn't she?
Posted 6 months ago # -
they were worried about blackmail.
I hadn't considered the whole affair was some nefarious attempt to obtain top secret info.
I'm sure he let his guard down, amongst other things.
Posted 6 months ago # -
I don't think that either GI - but they are looking into something.

This will help her book sell.
I'm interested in reading it....

Despite being adamantly opposed to the war in Iraq, I was genuinely impressed with Petraeus, not only what he accomplished but how. I am saddened by this news because we really do need heroes - not swaggering half wit presidents in cod pieces proclaiming the victory.
Yes, yes I know... there are heroes all around us - men and women who served admirably and returned to try to resume normal lives. Still, it would be nice if one of the few who made the news for something other than raping or murdering occupied citizens could have remained heroic. Alas...
Posted 6 months ago # -
well said Corvus.
he was heroic for many reasons which makes his downfall all the more tragic.
maybe it's humanity that betrayed us.
Posted 6 months ago # -
What do you mean humanity?
Maybe I'm not seeing the whole picture but it just looks to me like he couldn't keep his pants zipped and his integrity sucks.Posted 6 months ago # -
Interesting twist. But bear in mind that it's the Daily Mail!
Posted 6 months ago # -
by 'humanity' I mean we put these people on pedestals and conjure an image that their integrity somehow follows them in all facets of life.
we forget they're humans who are as inclined to f*ck up as the rest of us.
how sad that the other woman's hubby knew about it, but let it slide for the betterment of our country.
Posted 6 months ago # -
Just reread my post. "What do you mean humanity" sounds like a snark. I'm actually asking you to tell me more about what you mean.
Posted 6 months ago # -
I'm not sure if I failed to describe what I meant, or if we were both typing at the same time.
either way, I sensed no snark!
Posted 6 months ago # -
Yup, I was typing then got distracted and didn't hit send until later. Thank you for the explanation. I understand what you're saying.
I see integrity in black and white. Makes me a bit hard to deal with sometimes. I'm also pretty hardcore about fidelity so find it hard to cut someone slack in that.
I do see integrity as a blanket over the person not attached to different situations.

Seriously all, name one public official that didn't 'drop trou'.
...or tried desperately to free a 'Wiener'.
I remember clearly all the 'Betrayus' cracks of old, also remember two separate appointments by our resident doofus.
The ONLY reason 'Betrayus' is being slaughtered now is because he knows exactly what happened to our Marines and Ambassador in Benghazi.
Rest assured, he fell on his own petard, so we will all know the truth, eventually.
Posted 6 months ago # -
OK 1der,
A brief foray into etymology!! <grin>
I am curious about your use of the term "fell on his own petard." Was this a mixed metaphor or a local colloquialism? Just curious. Not being critical. My own grammar are not that much gooder than anyone else's. <grin> Seriously though. This is not a phrase I hear often nowadays and your use is different than anything I have heard elsewhere.
Petard is a bomb or explosive. So being hoisted on your own petard means you were blown or thrown up by your own bomb. Or more generally.....something bad you were intending to happen to harm someone else actually backfired and ended up harming you instead. Picture Wile E Coyote and the Road Running for a mental image. Wile had a huge pile of ACME petards he was always trying.
Your use is almost like it has been mixed with "fell on his sword." That is supposed to mean you chose a very extreme way to show your defeat. It is also like "falling on the grenade." That would normally mean a selfless act of self sacrifice to save others.
So....did you mean the General fell on his petard as in fell on the grenade? Or that he threw himself on his sword...except he used a grenade cause he didnt have a sword, or that he was hoisted on his own petard? Or something else entirely??
Clearly this is not a horribly serious question. Just a moment of idle curiosity while I took a tea break on a lovely Saturday afternoon <grin> Talk amongst yourselves.
D
Posted 6 months ago # -
It is a lovely Saturday afternoon, D.
I meant fell. I meant it was a bomb. And I meant our warrior hero sought to difuse it before it could be used against us.
Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.
Perhaps our president skipped that little kernel of wisdom.
Among many others, but no matter, he's got a mandate.
Posted 6 months ago # -
I always thought it was 'hoisted by your own petard'
Posted 6 months ago # -
"Seriously all, name one public official that didn't 'drop trou'."
oh please, there are tons of them. Madeleine Albright?
and just because it's de rigueur for politicians, doesn't mean it's acceptable for a military leader.
I also am hard-core about fidelity and question this man's integrity.
Posted 6 months ago # -
Penny, new times call for new vernaculars...
In case you hadn't noticed...
Posted 6 months ago # -
I also am hard-core about fidelity
Maybe you should look up the terms before you throw them around like you own them.
I'll let you choose hard-core, fwiw.
Posted 6 months ago # -
"fi·del·i·ty/fəˈdelitē/
Noun:
1.Faithfulness to a person, cause, or belief, demonstrated by continuing loyalty and support.
2.Sexual faithfulness to a spouse or partner.yep, that's what I thought alright.
and I still believe it's a poor reflection of a person's character should they not display it.you're the one who's throwing around phrases you've no clue about.
Posted 6 months ago # -
You failed.
I told you to look up hard-core.
You did look up fidelity, and any Military wife knows all too well his prick is ours first.
I didn't stutter, infidel.
Posted 6 months ago # -
This is silly. He fucked up big time. Literally. Now, if I was the head of the CIA the last person I would mess around with is a journalist or whatever she calls herself. The same as if I was the President of the United States I probably wouldn't take up with an intern.
Anyway, at this point people should think about his poor wife and the public humiliation she is going through. Because he sure as hell didn't consider it.
Posted 6 months ago # -
Okay, this is sillier.
"Now, if I was the head of the CIA the last person I would mess around with is a journalist or whatever she calls herself."
In Afghanistan, you meet white flesh that is tasked with wooing you.
This happened long before our warrior was head of our CIA.
Question one. Did the CIA know of her?
Question two. Did Obama?
Answer to both questions. YES.
She is pretty, fwiw. Better than I can say about Monica.
Military service plus one.
Posted 6 months ago # -
That is nonsense 1der. They first met in 2006 when she was at Harvard. They met regularly between 2006 and 2010 - in the US. If you are trying to say she was some kind of 'plant' in Afghanistan then you are really stretching things.
Posted 6 months ago # -
Got it 1der. You consider what he did an act of self sacrifice to save others.
Barring more information I would guess that is likely. And a shame he didn't keep control of himself. Sad to see someone do themselves in this way. And sad to see the harm that extends beyond the General.
And it was indeed a gorgeous day! I finished it off with a run to the south end transfer station with a pickemup truck of stuff to toss and stuff to recycle. Even that was a pleasure given how nice out it was!

The fact that he cheated I''ll forget for a moment. But it's odd that a guy in charge of a nation's spies wasn't careful enough to hide his own extramarital affair(s).
Posted 6 months ago # -
1der, tin foil on sale at the grocery outlet, you need a new hat.
As others have pointed out, those two knew each other for *years* before this happened. People are fallible, he slipped up and got caught by accident. Stupid to use gmail, double stupid to have two women who are not your wife pissed enough to make a bunch of noise. I don’t think this story is over by any means, but come on, is everything Obama’s fault or evil design?
Posted 6 months ago # -
I'd say it's unfortunate but indiscretions are more often than not. As far as how loud people scream depends on the political party involved and who's doing the screaming. For the ones who haven't been outed, it could be they're innocent or it could be that they have Lance Armstrong type resources to keep it quiet.
Yeah it's stupid esp if you're in a position of power or political office (or both) but obviously it happens. It's strange because people often idolize Kennedy but he was probably one of the worst of the lot. Was it that people didn't care before?
Posted 6 months ago # -
good question t--
my in-laws always seem to go on about the Kennedys. I think their image was more akin to royalty in some respects.myself, I think the guy (JFK) was a scumbag. maybe it's that Boston accent :)
Posted 6 months ago # -
Interesting point about JFK: he had Addison's disease, which sometimes can lead to increased sexual drive. There's been speculation about a possible link for years (but nobody knows).
For the same reason, he was unusually tan, as if he spent most of his time at the beach.
Rumor had it he smoked marijuana to alleviate back pain from the same disease. Also speculative and not documented.
Famous people leave a wake of legend...

Sign me up for a hookup with Marilyn Monroe for back pain please.

The net is widening to include General Allen. And just what is an "unpaid social liaison" for the military anyway? I love a good (fictional) spy story and this has all the earmarks of one. Well except the fictional part. Don't think we will ever have the full story on this one.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-20308225Posted 6 months ago # -
What is an unpaid social liaison? Well considering the price the market will bear for such goods, I'd guess its someone who is getting screwed in more ways than one.
Posted 6 months ago # -
Edog,
My guess is an "unpaid social liason" ivolves a whorehouse with a volunteer program. Or perhaps the same with an intern program? Either that or it is the new name for the dating scene. Just a guess though.
Posted 6 months ago # -
The cover-up is always worse than any private/public failure.
Thank God there's zero evidence of any cover-up(s). /sarcasm

iPlod: "Obama doesn't like Petraeus."
Ummm...right. That explains why Obama chose him to run the CIA. Because you always give a plum assignment like that to someone you don't like.
Posted 6 months ago # -
Cantor knew what was going on Oct 31 and didn't tell anybody. True Patriot!
The Times reported that Cantor learned of the whistle-blower through Rep. Dave Reichert, R-Washington.

You can't spill classified crap.
Unless you are in the administration.
Then, you can screw anyone you want to, deny it, and do it again.
No wonder it all comes out when it serves the administration. Anyway, it's all a right-wing conspiracy, because, nobody on the left could be so facebooking stupid.
Just trying to learn the secret handshake here. /sarcasm

Is Petraeus really that horrible?
Posted 6 months ago # -
Posted 6 months ago #
-
you just called him self-centered and obnoxious!
or that his mistress was self-serving and obsequious !
Posted 6 months ago # -
Nope, Petraeus is not all that horrible. But he was very foolish. And Allen was foolish too. Which, since they are supposed to be our national leaders in intelligence, kind of leaves them out there hanging in the wind.
Posted 6 months ago # -
SeaSpider,
Obama needs a rock solid toady to run the CIA for him now that he is re-elected. He may have picked rock solid, but Petraeus is no toady.
Posted 6 months ago # -
People having affairs is sadly not such a shock - what is a shock is how easily these professionals fell into such a ridiculous Abbot and Costello skit. Who's on first, no He's on First, I'm on third and Who's on second... I mean really. It is like a good ol' fashioned key party. I don't personally think the Petraeus affair was designed to block the investigation - but, hey, some people just need their conspiracy theories.
