When the world ends cockroaches and Twinkies would still be around! Nobody knows what the flag situation is about that I've asked. Just curious.

I posted a link, Gracie.
It was easy to find and post, but, I'm nobody.

1der,
I think Gracie may have assumed your link had to do with twinkies. I thought that too for a second. Then I actually looked at the link and wondered why the governor of wa would be quoted talking about the demise of filled sponge cakes! <grin> You are somebody 1der!!! No worries!!
Gracie.....just do a google along the lines of "nov 20 2012 flag lowering" will show you all the things that might have caused a flag to be lowered around the country. The federal buildings in the state have also lowered their flags for the same reason.

dsomers and onederfullone - As dsomers said, I did think the link had something to do with Twinkies & didn't check it out. Thanks for the link and info from both of you.

I did the link-to-twinkies mistake as well.
Do you know how to find out how or if someone with a home flag recognizes a "half mast" status?

LIA,
A home flag? Not sure i follow that. As in a US flag flown on their house? Should it be half mast or not?
Posted 7 months ago # -
Maybe that was a stupid question. It seems like there might be a way to show a kind of "half mast" respect but I can't imagine how.

LIA,
Nah....a good question. I just wasn't quite clear on your wording.
Believe it or not, but the US Code of Federal Regulation, Title 4 Chapter 1, covers this very scenario. A bracket mounted flag like you find on a home isn't expected to be hung at half staff. You can show your respect for the occasion by hanging a black ribbon from the finial or tip of the flag. One on each side.
Was that what you were asking about?

sounds like you've got yourself an invention there, d-- a home flag pole that has a telescoping portion in the middle so you can slide it down to half-mast.
I saw bambooboy's fly-rod page and was thinking he could help with a prototype.
and LIA could assist in marketing, since she has a knack of asking the questions that haven't been asked before and getting people excited about new concepts.
I'll bet you could retire in a year if word gets out!

GI....I will call it half mast flags!
Another invention for the patriotic.....a fly rod flag pole so you can wave old glory and cast for that big lunker of a steelhead hiding on the far side of that pool! I bet we could even do a study that would show that our steelhead, patriotic anadromous fisk that they are (note the use of the ballardian/norwegian word for fish), actually respond better to flies cast to them on a bamboo fly rod and flag pole with the US standard snapping smartly from the tip with each cast! I can almost hear the national anthem being played from the banks of the rivers now! Wow!!
Bambooboy...you up for this??

HAHAHAH
You guys are cracking me up!
And yes that was my exact question and thank you.
Hope you have a lovely Thanksgiving.Posted 6 months ago # -
Hope you have a wonderful Holiday too LIA! And all the rest of the MB crew too!
A cultural question that just occurred to me.
If you take a lute fisk and use Bambooboy's lathe to bore a hole through it lengthwise, and then bored a series of carefully placed holes in from the sides, essentially making it a wind instrument, would those same Ballardian/Norwegians refer to it as a flute fisk?Dave

OMG ya gotta love a man who knows how to do a good pun!

D, the Flute Fisk is the historic and cultural instrument of the Saami people

U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Matthew H. Stiltz died.
Gov. Chris Gregoire has directed that flags at all Washington state agency buildings be lowered to half-staff Tuesday, Nov. 20th, in memory of U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Matthew H. Stiltz of Spokane. Stiltz was killed November 12 when insurgents attacked his unit with artillery fire in Afghanistan.

Thank you Cougar Bob for keeping this thread on topic. This is not just about a flag at half-staff, but a soldier who died who was from our state. My son is over there right now, and I am grateful that our state recognizes the sacrifice of this soldier and that of his family and loved ones.
