What was this noise? Train horns this eve. Perfect damp, dark evening for these sounds!

That's the sound of coal heading North.

Sorry, don't get me wrong, I love the sound of trains too, and I'm not all that concerned about whether they are full of coal or not.

I'll bet the homeowners close to the tracks, especially those with a view, might be a bit annoyed with the increased coal train traffic..to say nothing of the horns. Not only in the damp of winter but all the time every day. I prefer fog horns and barking sea lions.

I had a neighbor who used to live just over the tracks. She said the diesel residue from the train left soot over everything.

well, aren't you just a ray of sunshine.....

Maybe the people who bought houses near the tracks knew that trains would be moving along them and decided that the view was worth it.

A long time ago a train was considered modern and sophisticated - a real sign of prosperity - so its not uncommon to find really nice old trophy houses built very close to the tracks. Once that fad got old, they all went out and got Ipads.

It's mainly that the trains need flatness, and we mostly only have that for long stretches along the shoreline. If we DO end up with all coal trains all the time, traffic trying to cross the tracks downtown will be a problem, and maybe ship traffic waiting for the railroad bridge at the Locks, too.

    NO coal trains!

    Never!

btw, I love the whistles, it means money, unless it's a faceboking commuter train, which means taxpayer funded piles of goo headed nowhere.

btw, any coal train smells better, and leaves a smaller footprint than any liberal.

Wait...I didn't know the coal was already going thru our neighborhood...for some reason I thought that was something that required voting...yay or nay. I heard that train last night...chooo chooo chooo - louder than usual...chooo chooo chooo...

I live on the tracks and I love it. No diesel on my house. However, I am also against the coal trains. They chug along uncovered. A recipe for disaster.

Yeah, we cover all taxpayer funded piles of goo.

    Coal should get better.

The recent efforts are to block additional coal bearing trains from passing through Seattle en route to Bellingham. We already have 11 or so per day and the number would increase to 17 (last I heard). The Puget Sound Keepers Alliance and UW have done extensive research and found no measurable or only trace amounts of coal dust. Burlington Northern / Santa Fe has been working on methods to control the dust for better than 10 years and have been largely successful. You can also read all about that.

Wow, the train just went by again - toting one car...silent as a lamb...no choo chooing this time. Almost as silent as a Prius. Who knew?

  20. I used to work in an old creamery building with a train that passed 2x/day. Our building shook when it went by; was little more than an arm's length away. The engineer always gave a hoot and a wave. That was in Charlotte, VT-- in fact that was where they shot Me, Myself, and Irene in 1999

I do like the 'power past coal' banner at the top of this page.

the little trains are cute and seem to get me in the holiday spirit.
