May all the little critters find shelter.
That's a big storm for Portland, but not so much for the Oregon coast, unless the wind predictions are off. The Oregon coast always gets a couple storms per year of sustained winds around 90mph with gusts around 100mph. Fortunately, they are prepared for it and simply nail the shingles back on their roof the next day and collect anything that blew away.
sounds like a good time for a bike ride heading south. Think of the tail wind heading back home!
bambooboy: Look out for those cross winds! As a kid I loved to go out when the storm first started, the winds were warm and the rain hadn't hit yet. At 70mph, I could almost have the wind support me and it was easier to exhale by turning my head.
The only thing I miss from that place are the good storms. One year we got a particularly ferocious storm and I remember standing in front of our large, double paned picture window. I was fascinated because I could see our house lights reflected in the window and not only would the reflection change when I watched the window flex in and out, it would make an audible *worp* noise. The wind was not coming straight at the window, but in fact from the other side of the house. Not surprisingly, my mother was not crazy about me standing in front of the window, watching it flex in and out. I loved the noise it made. The next day, many people on the side of the wind had their sliding glass doors broken, but we don't know if it was from flying objects or just the wind itself.
I once went on a trip to Crown Point and there the gusts were high enough that they were pushing me around as an adult.
My mother also lived through the infamous Columbus Day Storm in 1962 and lived further up the north oregon coast at the time. The coast guard actually used hurricane flags to warn people outside of their station.
fortunately almost all our storms come from Kent, directly south of us. My route is directly south on 15th and the Alaskan way. When I turn around to head home it's almost completely with the wind. I've done this several times and the ride home is a lot of fun. Not so much traveling into it though.
I'm saying a little prayer for my trees.
Just got some wood from a big pine cut down by the city which would have taken out the house across the street. The city arborist told the homeowner he'd be dead before he knew it. Glad that's no longer a threat, but I worry every time we have a wind storm.
I hope my trees hold.
Big old Mars Hill ad across the front as I write this. Scary.
When we got engaged/married, I started moving my stuff up to our house. We were in the process of cleaning out the old house and gave ourselves a timeline of the end of Nov. I think this was in '06? Maybe '07, I'm bad at remembering. We went to the old house to take the last of my stuff (we had taken all the good stuff previously) and do the dreaded cleaning before the official move-out only to find a tree through the house and caution tape around the house :) The house had shifted off its foundation even. We snuck in to get a few things of importance and then high-fived each other because neither of us really wanted to do the final cleaning. The tree had gone right through where I slept, which was a wee bit sobering.
06 Teigyr.
teigyr - someone was looking out for you. So glad you weren't in the house.
The commute this morning wasn't bad at all - no winds to speak of, no rain and traffic very light. We'll see what it's like tonight. I just noticed the flag that was on top of Smith Tower is gone. Wonder if it got blown off.
Heard as I was leaving house that tonight the snow level is now 200 feet. Crap. Hope it's rain/snow. It can snow all it wants - once I'm on vacation and don't have to drive! Maybe a white Christmas???
cold bike ride tonight (18 miles). No Blowmageddon though, just a coldmageddon instead.
