Henrietta, the intrepid Ballard traveling hen, is again on the loose. Her owner, Lisa Mudgett, tells us she flew the coop just a day ago. “She wasn’t in her coop sleeping when we got home last night, so we’re guessing she’s on another neighborhood adventure,” Mudgett writes.

Henrietta’s last adventure was around Thanksgiving during a big wind and rain storm. “If anyone finds a stray chicken in his/her yard, we’d really like to have her back home safe and sound. And we clearly need to invest in some better containment for our yard…” Mudgett adds.

If you have any information on Henrietta’s whereabouts, email us at tips@myballard.com.

I'm standing on my back porch with a big roasting pot hoping to catch Henrietta.

    if I'm successful, I'll give the owners a ha-penny.

Henrietta escaped near the Nordic Heritage Museum (30th Ave NW & NW 67th St). Here's a map of the area...

If Henrietta is anywhere near my part of Ballard she has likely met her maker in the form of a racoon. Great Idea should put the roasting pan away for now.

So I grew up next door to Mrs. MacArthur and her chickens. The henhouse was just a little below and to the east of my bedroom. Noisy things. But mainly they were dumb, in relative terms of course - after all how smart does a chicken have to be? And they couldn't fly more then four, five feet off the ground - and even at that height they weren't very good at flying. So how the heck is Henrietta pulling off these escapes? Edited to remove dire prediction.

Cate - this is another aspect of selective breeding to achieve the desired result. Chickens are, in the natural state, ground feeding birds but they can fly and often roost in trees. The origins of our domestic chickens are found in Asia.
And chickens are relatively intelligent, and can be loving "pets". But they are all better off in the wild.

PD - thanks for asking. I am still functioning! I am doing most of the things that I did before my incident and can't really get my head around what happened but here I am. Life is strange, not sure what it is all about but I know there is something here around us all that has to do with love! :)
